The problem with an insanity plea is that you may end up in a mental health facility for more decades than a sentence would get you. It's actually difficult for normal people to get out, ad the hospitals get funding for the number of patients that they have. A journalist once checked herself into one, and was not let out for 3-4 weeks and after being involuntarily sedated and medicated. Neither her family, nor her employer, could get her out until the hospital decided they were done.
