I recently learned that Japan still imports at least 80% of its food, possibly as high as 90%.
There just isn't enough arable land on those mountainous islands.
It's also why they'll never try to go to war again, constitution or not. Cut off the food. Done.
Apparently the rice thing has a lot of "government intervention" keeping them from producing more than they could be, very similar to our farming issues, and the increasing urban density making it impossible to find young, strong men to move out there to work the fields, so they are slowly aging out of having the workforce for what farmland they do have.
I imagine that was the intention for all the immigrants in the first place. Sending them to the rice fields (motherfucker).
More like a lot of arable land has been abandoned due to mass urbanization (92% compared to the 83% of the US). Japan used to produce 80% of their food back in 1960, while having to sustain 22% fewer people.

I believe it's the percentage of population that live in areas classified as urban
probably why they like to invade china or korea, for farm land or to make vassal states and have some kinda grain/rice tax.
i dont blame the japanese for invading china. its really the only legit way for a country to grow by taking it via force.
you can tell that the immigration thing is some kinda pussy womanly thing to do. taking over without being physical. meanwhile.. old, manly times, we at least fuck each other up for land and even the nobleman can sometime die because they are in battle sometimes.
