Problem is that "specific" doctors often operate on referral only, and you aren't going to see him unless that guessing doctor agrees you need to.
Obviously big ones like dentist or eye are easy enough, but things like throat or surgery are going to tell you to come back with said referral before they talk to you.
Its one of those things where it makes sense why its that way, but it sucks for all of us that it is.
Many of the ails in our medical system comes from the retarded, the addicted, and the "lol I ain't paying that" making everything need to protect itself from getting screwed. So prices are raised because all the niggers and illegals will never pay and they need to compensate, pain killers require you to be dying to get one because addicts are constantly scamming, and specialists need a filter to keep out the hypochondriac/Munchausen/idiot.
It's not just blacks and aliens, it's everyone. Only insurance companies pay for anything, and everyone else declares medical bankruptcy. If you're not gonna pay 30% of your bill, then there will be a 30% surcharge on all bills.
White guys commit illegal immigration, but we still understand that its a fraction of the amount committed by Latinos. If we cut the biggest offenders the problem would drop to a manageable "there is always evil in this world" level instead of a catastrophe.
I had a PPO insurance policy that let me see specialists on my own so long as they were in-network. Granted, the policy was really expensive (I didn't know any better and got shuffled into a equivalent policy as my parents' when I turned 26 by their insurance agent), and I only used it to see an ENT for a chronic nosebleed.
Most people will be on an HMO policy, which does require you to see a PCP to filter out the people convinced they have turbo cancer for everything.

Fair enough.
