Can you imagine anything worse, in the realm of gaming, then playing as a pair of literal millennial girl writers? I expend a decent amount of effort actively avoiding the shit products of millennial girl boss authors. These are the exact people who have fucked fantasy and sci-fi to hell over the last 10+ years. Now they want me to skip right over their painfully terrible self-inserts to play as the actual retards themselves?
The game looks very technically competent. I'm sure the gameplay is fine. But I don't need to tolerate horrible characters, dialogue, and story in my video games. I'm not "missing out" by skipping this shit, same as I'm not missing out when I bypass games created by people who hate me. There are already more good games in existence than any one person could ever fully play. But even if this were the only game in the world, I'd rather quit the hobby than suffer through these characters and this writing.
I blame a lot of the flaws of the millennial generation on tv. Specifically pedoface Colbert and his retarded show. That is the thing that convinced millennials that grating snark was the same thing as real wit.
I still think Buffy is patient zero. It has all the hallmarks we now come to expect from woke media. Nonstop retarded quips. Overpowered girl bosses. LGBT nonsense. If Buffy were released today, you know it would have a bunch of anti-white messaging. In fact, I bet the real bad guys would be conservative white dudes. All the literal monsters would be excused or redeemed.
Buffy gets a pass from a lot of people - like Mauler - because it’s structurally okay and reasonably competent, but I’m not swallowing a bunch of feminist media just because they got some of the basic mechanics right.
Shit, we watched Degrassi Next Gen in our 20s, for the smoking chics, and the absolutely absurd stories. It wasn't any good but you could laugh at it and take in the scenery.
There was an episode of Buffy with her training Dawn. And through the whole episode she keeps asking Dawn, who has the power. And Dawn, and the audience, with her thinks it's an empowering statement. In the end Dawn tries killing a vampire alone and is almost killed when Buffy shows up. And after Buffy kills it she answers the question, the vampires have the power. They are strong, powerful, dangerous creatures.
I remember it because it's such an anti-girlboss sentiment.
The show had its moments and I had fun watching it as a teenager.
But it's definetly Girlboss : The Womening. Rolled my eyes at the ''Lol I'm gay now.'' moment.
The lead character was allowed to have major flaws and get the shit beat out of her several times.
If it was made post 2010, there would be ''transwomen'' slayers to validate the delusions that they are ''real women''.
It was definitely the origin of girlbossing yep.
Buffy had some quite overt anti-White messaging, although admittedly it's more anti-Male than anti-White overall. However, you can definitely see it there if you're looking (heck, the premise itself is that White suburbia is the gateway to Hell).
Come on just because there is two female protagonist doesn't automatically mean they will be insufferable girl bosses.
I can't tell if you're being sarcastic or not.
Two female writer main characters? That kind of metanarrative masturbation ends up as Mary Sue but quirrrrky 99% of time. I guess xcom taught us that isn't automatic but the rest of life would call the rare not shit writing rounding errors.
I was being sarcastic
At this point, it doesn’t even matter if they are girl bosses or not. I’m straight up not interested in the female perspective anymore. I don’t care about their stories, so it doesn’t matter how “well” they are told. The only female protagonists I can stomach anymore are stoic non-masculine asexual autistics like Frieren. If the character can’t be replaced 1 to 1 with a man, if the narrative or themes have anything to do with the “female experience”, then I. Don’t. Care.
Basically I have the same tolerance for female protagonists in media as I have for female comedians. The moment there’s a single joke about your dating life or your vagina, I’m out.
I hear you. I was watching Chopped and they were introducing the chefs and got to a girl one and the first thing she says is, "They are going to underestimate me because I'm a smiley girl."
And Chopped and the Food Network are openly progressive. So even when you give women equal footing, they still believe they are being oppressed or held back.
I ended up yelling at the television in a diatribe about how women are given multiple advantages and still complain
Two female protags in a Japanese game that isn't by a big JP publisher tho just means more tiddies and tend to do well.
e.g. Stellar Blade
And lesbians.
Sounds more like Shit Ficiton.
I could imagine worse. There could be three of them!
I can imagine plenty of decent games that could have a millennial girl writer as a main character. A horror game, as either victim or killer protagonist might work, where on the one side they learn the harm and hardship they cause others throughout the game, while on the other they're just a villain protagonist while "marks" could be much more sympathetic and well-written characters.
Alternatively, some kind of otome-game dating sim, where once again, the core flow of the narrative is breaking away from the baseline beginning state character and becoming a better person. As long as you don't abandon the principle that the MC needs to undergo a heroes' journey of some sort, develop, learn from their naive or mistaken past, and come back wiser and better, you can work with pretty much any raw material in character narrative.
And even the most brainrotted of GAlpha slashfic guys penning their first fanfics understand that, so it shouldn't be a high bar to demand from any writing.
Noticing the “Normie” YouTubers are getting wined and dined more now. All of them say Avowed was “Okay” and very few of them talked about the major PC problems like permanent game load crashes on saves and control file corruptions. All praise Monster Hunter Wilds! (except ignore the major PC issues.) And now this game comes out of left field like it wasn’t the sleeper hit of the century.
Nah this one has been on people's radar for a while: because their prison escape game had moments of great stuff, 10% of it was really cool co-op mechanics. Then their 'it takes two' game, took what worked and made it so 80% of the game was the stuff that worked well, all while there was a gaming drought. The aesthetic aside, it was a good game at the right time that was 40x better than their last. All while streaming of co-op games has seen an upsurge again. With that level of improvement, the next one was highly anticipated. Anyone who likes co-op like they specialise in was looking forward and hoping for something great from em.
I agree with the other crits that I've seen here, but this does have a pedigree, it was from a 'franchise' of co-op games that had been getting better and better and really delivered for a lot of people last time. It's not from nowhere
