Not necessarily as unfortunately partner has invaded the lexicon for straight people who are too scared of commitment to marry and think it's too childish to say 'my girlfriend' in their forties.

It invaded the lexicon because it was a way that homos could bring up their homolover in conversation without "revealing" they were gay. It was an important part of their language manipulation tactics during the 00s angling for gay marriage.
Which meant it got used everywhere until the point it became normalized for a lot of people who don't put any thought into their words and are susceptible to using words from popculture demographics like gays.
