Going off of wiki's latest population numbers and 2024 medal counts and ignoring the "Refugee Olympic Team" or "Individual Neutral Athletes." Top 5 would be:
Any medal:
Grenada: 2 medals / 112k people
Dominica: 1 medal / 67k people
Saint Lucia: 2 medals / 184k people
New Zealand: 20 medals / 5.3m people
Bahrain: 4 medals / 1.6m people
Australia, 9th.
Golds only:
Dominica: 1 gold / 67k people
Saint Lucia: 2 golds / 184k people
New Zealand: 10 golds / 5.3m people
Bahrain: 2 golds / 1.6m people
Slovenia: 2 golds / 2.1m people
Australia, 10th.
Fun fact: India beats Pakistan in per-capital medals. 6 medals / 1.4b vs. 1 medal / 241m, but Pakistan has infinitely more gold medals.
They have the numbers to produce a lot of Olympian-tier genetic freaks just by pure chance, but half of them are growing up in conditions so wretched that it'd take out fucking Heracles. No amount of superpower lottery is going to save you from spending the first fifteen years of your life eating and drinking out of a 1-foot deep stream serving as the garbage dump and sewage line for millions of people.
They’re also very good at (field) hockey, both men’s and women’s. They dominated it for decades.
However they sort of went downhill after it moved from grass to astroturf, though that “blip” in results seems to be more the aberration than anything…
Let me guess - Australia won on a per capita basis?
I have no idea why India does so poorly per capita.
Interesting question.

Damn New Zealand looks impressive.
They absolutely killed it this Olympics. Even I, as an Australian, have to give them that.
They completely smashed us in canoe sprint, rugby and rowing, and the men’s high jump of course. And we did roughly even in track cycling.
They’re doing phenomenal for a less-wealthy, less-populated country, compared to Aus…
Maybe you guys need to do more land acknowledgment ceremonies?
I agree. With one or two medals you could be looking at a statistical anomaly, but New Zealand's right up there with them.

Indians are busy mass migrating to australia, canada and usa. We are doomed.
it's not over til the fat black lady sings.
Only Brahman caste gets to go to the Olympics.
I would say that Indians don't look particularly athletic as a nation but they did win the world cricket cup.
That sport sucks ass though.
Does not look appealing at all but still they beat England and South Africa.

Hockey is technically their national sport.
