I disagree. many leftists do in fact believe themselves to be the good guys. they are so sure of their righteousness that the evil acts they do to their enemies are not considered evil.

leftists are crusaders fighting a holy war in all but name. so long as they target their enemy, anything they do is permissible. Any lie they tell, any money they steal, people they hurt, or even people they kill is acceptable so long as they targeted the right people.
You have your chicken and egg mixed up. They're happy to do evil because that is what they are. What they crave are excuses, a veneer of legitimacy to give them free reign to seek out victims.

That's definitely true for the people at the forefront, but plenty of the followers truly believe they're morally superior.
