There's bad faith all around. Some people complaining that it's not exactly 1-to-1. Unicorn Overlord might get brought up soon. I was shown a comparison of a conversation with a female bodyguard assigned to the MC; it actually looked just fine to me, don't know why people would use that for complaints.
Then I see the bird-pun fellow. Literally on the level of pickle dude from FE Fates.
Edit: Goddammit guys, I try not to care about downvotes but I mostly agreed with all of you, and still get nothing but that? Make it make sense.
You just pulled some "both sides BS" and used a worse example to justify the current thing not being so bad.
Maybe you should actually consider what your words are saying rather than just spitting out nonsense and assuming everyone will understand and agree with you.
There IS bad faith arguments. That recent NicheGamer article on the opening segment of Infinite Wealth? Bad faith. I hate this shit as much as any of you, but that article hurt our position, making us look way too obsessed with unofficial rough translations. Pick your fucking battles, because loose cannons lose support.
The only bad faith arguments are ones which disregard the truth. The reason GG was able to make progress at all was because a group of autists refused to compromise on their principles.
pick your battles
Oh, you're one of those "muh PR" people. It seems you're upset that people are choosing "hills to die on" that you don't see value in.
Here's the reality: Censorship is inevitably a slippery slope. Something that looks small will become big in the future. That's how we ended up in such a shit situation to begin with.
There will always be opposition and people who sneer at anything which goes against the status quo, but we wouldn't even be having this conversation to begin with if autists didn't care about what was actually being translated or not.
I also took a look at that NicheGamer article and I don't see any issues with it (unless I'm missing something). The translators literally added in feminist terms and turns of phrase where there weren't any. Sega and Atlus are not in a position of good faith where something like that can be called an honest mistake.
These are not 'rough translations' people are talking about, stop letting the NPCs manipulate you with a false narrative. This is like when this stupid woman went around New York in an area she knew she'd get cat called depending on how she dressed they are pulling the exact same shit. Then you look at it and realise what they did and how manipulative it all is.
I think most people just don't want their content changed because of someone's bias, as they like the content for what it is, not what someone on our side of the world thinks it should be.
There is always bad faith on both sides cause humans like to take advantage of others, but it doesn't excuse any of the bad behavior exhibited by localizers over the past few years and people aren't wrong to want the original creator's work.
The Unicorn Overlord thing is absolutely a case of "the well is poisoned."
Because its clear that most of the problems is them trying to fluff up the dialogue to sound more grand and medieval, which probably wouldn't be a problem if localizers hadn't poisoned the well. So now literally anything, even stuff that is probably innocent enough, will be attacked, critiqued and run around.
Because so far of all the examples the only thing that looks slightly ideological is turning "old women" into "unmagicked octogenarians." Which has enough plausible deniability to just be coincidental, but no one will give them the benefit of the doubt because they've thrown away any good will anyone would ever want to give them.
The true victim in all this is the parts that people don't notice. Like the big focus in Triangle Strategy in removing all gendered text, but nobody bringing up that the game let's you successfully argue that the Not-Jews deserve to be put into the Labor Camps and have their rights stripped.
