this is because Japan had a way to actually culturally compartmentalize, differentiate, and assimilate
It's why I cringe whenever the anime/autist-to-troon is brought up. Each culture handles fictional concepts differently to the point that the mental defense mechanisms aren't the same, and going too far with the idea will result in dumbasses wanting to ban and go after what is one of the last untouched creative escapes.
Yes, there are LuGBuTs in Japan, but the AniTroon is predominantly a Western phenomenon if you stay away from their version of coomers. The Japanese still understand what is proper behavior because it's drilled into their society.

That would be going too far, but I'd definitely encourage a critical eye with this understanding in mind. I remember coming back to one of my favorite animes, Steins;Gate... little seeds - like consuming Dr Pepper and having sympathy and repeated acknowledgement for what is essentially a crossdressing boy stand out. To western eyes, this is very different synthesis - especially if you were raised in a liberal wonderland.
I had a college friend who recommended and gave me Steins;Gate, but I was well aware of Ruka's existence already, so I avoided it. I still have the files but haven't bothered to watch it
I mean... it's okay. It still holds up in its own way, but I definitely wouldn't give it the letter of recommendation that I would have given you 10 years ago.
You'd be fine now if you watch it as you understand the concept more.
Spoiler:
It actually plays off less off the whole trans stuff and more Ruka is willing to sacrifice the body where she could live forever with the man she admires in order to save a friend. Afterwards he basically just accepts who he is more.
At some point I might go back through all the anime my friends gave me to watch, and watch SG as well. There's quite a few series I need to see or haven't finished.
