I had a college friend who recommended and gave me Steins;Gate, but I was well aware of Ruka's existence already, so I avoided it. I still have the files but haven't bothered to watch it
I mean... it's okay. It still holds up in its own way, but I definitely wouldn't give it the letter of recommendation that I would have given you 10 years ago.
You'd be fine now if you watch it as you understand the concept more.
Spoiler:
It actually plays off less off the whole trans stuff and more Ruka is willing to sacrifice the body where she could live forever with the man she admires in order to save a friend. Afterwards he basically just accepts who he is more.
At some point I might go back through all the anime my friends gave me to watch, and watch SG as well. There's quite a few series I need to see or haven't finished.
