As much as I'd be interested in seeing it happen, the feds aren't that dumb with all the false flags under their belts. The optics of "killing law enforcement who are doing the job the feds should be doing" looks bad if the feds want to act like the good guys. Even supposedly anti-cop cities are complaining about the illegals (unless they get enough of a kickback).
I know the feds really, really don't care about optics, but they know they won't win a fight against the populace without enough foreigners and illegals acting as a distraction.
Any and every day that we're not already lynching leftists is a day I'm disappointed. This probably won't be our Sumpter, but an escalation is good regardless.
Ft Sumter was a masterclass of shrewd political tactics mixed with crafty military entrapment... on Lincoln's side.
(Lincoln was disturbingly brilliant when it came to politics if you look at the stuff he did while in office, though it probably helped that his opponent's all thought he was a back-woods imbecile.)
If a modern Civil War kicks off, one of the spark elements will likely be similar. Trying to force legislation explicitly spelling out what Abbot would like to do would be foolish - the smarter move would be to force Federal forces into a bad position so they could act badly, and then Abbot can just shrug his shoulders, act to counter them, and when people start screaming, he can offer a simple out - 'Hey, these bad actors must have been acting without authority, right? They were doing the equivalent of a coup, right?'
Always, always, always make your opponent look like the bad guy. 'Rogue Federal troops shooting on good 'ole Texas boys' is the perfect recipe for such, because the current regime is stupid as fuck and would likely reply with 'No, we're coming to kill you all', which I'm sure a bunch of people would absolutely adore.
But this is all fanfiction. It would never happen. Never ever. Right? Right.
I don't think that is likely.
Secession wouldn't pass in even the Texas State Senate and it is definitely not going anywhere in the Texas State House.
I think Texas can still stay in the Union while protecting its sovereign right to enforce border security.
Doesn't matter if it's likely. It's necessary.
If the feds attack state troops in order to explicitly prevent border enforcement, there really isn't any other choice.
if they do that, things will get SPICY.

I remember in 2015 the Texas GOP had a motion that failed to put secession on the ballot. Or was an attempt to do so
You will be disappointed then.
Most elected politicians in the Texas legislature have openly stated they are against secession.
This is not the avenue they will pursue.

It's funny you mention Sumter.
