The Sacramento Bee is upset over "GOP victory" (the state toughened child trafficking laws) (archive.is)

California Democrats spent the final few days before summer recess in an unusual spot: embroiled in a legislative fight with Republicans, who typically operate in the shadow of the state’s blue supermajority.

Imagine opening with that statement and not seeing any issue with it...

Especially given how furious and dismissive they are about states where the opposite is true

Here’s what to know as Democrats continue to deal with the fallout.

The fallout from harsher sentencing guidelines for human trafficking???

To be faaaaair...

It's not like child trafficking was considered a good thing a few decades ago. Why wouldn't the sentences then continue to be the same now - other than political stunts?

My favorite detail is that they counter the lead GOP lady’s claim that “California is a hub of human trafficking” by bragging that the state’s share of cases nationally has declined from 18 percent to 13, which is to say, still more than its share if cases were distributed in line with state populations! And they even lead that brag by admitting that human trafficking cases are underreported, so they don’t actually know!

(By the way, leading with the fact that kills your argument and disposing of it in one sentence of part-sentence, then dedicating the rest of the paragraph to making the case you’d make if that inconvenient fact was not there, is a pretty standard bullshitting technique. Watch out for it!)

Sure makes you think about why lefties would fight this so hard...
