I thought the Hobbit movie from the 70s or 80s (can’t remember) was good. Saw it as a little kid and it made me read the book when I got a little older. I would say they weren’t trying to subvert Tolkien’s work.
They also did an animated Return of the King (but skipped Fellowship and 2 Towers for some reason).
I'm not going to say that Rankin/Bass didn't do some weird stuff (cause they did some really weird stuff), but their stuff was (overall) good, compared to the modern-day "this is weird and terrible".
I remember it blowing my mind when reading the book that Beorn and other elements were stripped from the cartoon. It was like getting free DLC to the story.
Didn't a bunch of the cartoon creators go on to form Studio Ghibli?
I tried watching the Star Wars...Visions? I think it was called that, was supposed to be like the Animatrix (which is legitimately good) for the Star Wars universe.
It’s a shame all of our beloved IPs don’t have defenders like Christopher Tolkien. Peter Jackson said his job was to present Tolkien’s vision. Now I would’ve liked to have seen Tom Bombadil but overall he did a great job.
What's truly a shame is that all of the creative industries are so creatively bankrupt and ideologically pozzed that IP's even NEED to be protected from idiots and malcontents.
Producer Philippa Boyens explained the decision to make her the protagonist, “Everyone else dies!” And before you start complaining, this is already in the text, and also the story takes place centuries before the movies
Preemptively trying to justify something that she knows people don't want.
Aside from having the film focus on Hammerhand’s daughter rather than Helm Hammerhand, the film also reportedly features a scene that “shows the politics at play in Edoras, with a lord of Rohan wanting to erase the history of a group of female warriors and banner women to the king, a prelude of things to come.”
Yeah so it's straight up feminist fan-fiction. Not that anyone expected anything different.
Animated versions of any classics just make them worse. The animation industry is not interested in respecting anything, just changing it.

That one actually is decent, but animation back then was so different it is impossible to compare to the current industry.

The Soviet Union made the most bizarre version.

Wow!

I didn’t know they formed a studio.

It was not.
Is that the one where every lead is female?
Yeah it was quite woke, I couldn't finish Season 1.
I forgot about the first season but the second season is definitely so.
The first episode was really good. After that it just took a nose dive. I stopped watching after the 4th episode.

Christopher Tolkien cared about and respected his father’s work.
And it sucks to see his grandkids and great grandkids dont care
Probably some flavor of woke trash.

Female writer?
Well, I knew Tolkien wasn't a woman.
But yes, I'm not in the slightest surprised. You can always tell when women are involved in something creative, it has that air of hatred in it.
