I thought the Hobbit movie from the 70s or 80s (can’t remember) was good. Saw it as a little kid and it made me read the book when I got a little older. I would say they weren’t trying to subvert Tolkien’s work.
They also did an animated Return of the King (but skipped Fellowship and 2 Towers for some reason).
I'm not going to say that Rankin/Bass didn't do some weird stuff (cause they did some really weird stuff), but their stuff was (overall) good, compared to the modern-day "this is weird and terrible".
I remember it blowing my mind when reading the book that Beorn and other elements were stripped from the cartoon. It was like getting free DLC to the story.
Didn't a bunch of the cartoon creators go on to form Studio Ghibli?
I tried watching the Star Wars...Visions? I think it was called that, was supposed to be like the Animatrix (which is legitimately good) for the Star Wars universe.
Animated versions of any classics just make them worse. The animation industry is not interested in respecting anything, just changing it.

That one actually is decent, but animation back then was so different it is impossible to compare to the current industry.

The Soviet Union made the most bizarre version.

Wow!

I didn’t know they formed a studio.

It was not.
Is that the one where every lead is female?
Yeah it was quite woke, I couldn't finish Season 1.
I forgot about the first season but the second season is definitely so.
The first episode was really good. After that it just took a nose dive. I stopped watching after the 4th episode.
