Ohio's on the eastern edge of what I'd call the Midwest - Nebraska, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Kansas, Missouri, Arkansas, and western Kentucky/Tennessee (the eastern halves of those states are too mountainous to be Midwestern), plus southern Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Michigan.
It's good country, though, and filled with good people (outside of a few big cities).

I will say that changing the popular perception of a thing makes it easier to change that thing in reality, so the push to make Ohio look like a weird shithole housing an unlimited number of murderous degenerates attracts murderous degenerates who want to live in a weird shithole, similar to the media push for queer everything has made it trendy to be queer regardless if people are or are not.
I don't think it was astroturfing as much as it is "Who cares? Is anyone even from Ohio?" I had some experience with its residents before I ever visited the state myself. I always dreaded seeing Ohio plates, because they drove like an asshole more often than not. Most of the women I met were at least a little crazy. Cleveland and Columbus both suck. I do enjoy the rural areas, though. I think that, while people do make fun of Ohio, we all understand it's nowhere near being on the same level as California, Illinois, and New York.
