The way I personally see it, we're called to be gentle as doves, but shrewd as serpents. You don't pre-judge individuals by the aggregate, but you don't throw out the aggregate as useless information either.
The distinction in approach I see is as to whether we choose to believe the individual is an exception so as not to judge by the aggregate, or whether we judge by the aggregate while consciously allowing for the possibility that the individual could be an exception.
All things being equal, I favor the latter approach these days when dealing with out-groups.

Taking those two points together is the only rational approach.
