Well, he has the same idea of freedom that most Americans do now: "everything I like should be permitted, or maybe even compulsory, and everything I don't should send you straight to jail."
Unfortunately, that goes for all sides, but the left has really turned the dial to 11 on this philosophy.
I don't understand why our civics education has failed so badly, but if you don't think your neighbor should be allowed to do whatever the fuck they want as long as it doesn't hurt somebody else, even if you don't personally like it, you're not really understanding the concept of freedom.
Now, now, remember that it’s much sillier than that. During BLM they used “white silence is black violence” as a slogan. So both words and not words are violence.
"Do as thou wilt, as long as no one sees it" is how we got here. There's no such thing as "doesn't hurt somebody else," because a sick mind in private contributes to a sick body politic in public, which harms everyone.
Well there's your problem, one man's sin is another man's righteousness. I'm pretty sure the Muslims who blew up the World Trade Center thought they were righteous. And you'd find no shortage of people even today who agree with them. There literally isn't a single army in the history of mankind that didn't go to war thinking they were fighting for righteousness.
You're describing a theocracy, which was explicitly rejected by our founders, and only works if the vast majority of the population shares exactly the same religion and values.
And also isn't very free, because we're right back to "everything I like should be permitted, or maybe even compulsory, and everything I don't should send you straight to jail."
That kind of postmodernist subjectivism is, once again, precisely how we got to such a shitty point in our society.
This isn't subjective. Some things are just inherently evil. This isn't a pet peeve and trying to consign moral disagreements as such is disingenuous at best.
Crossdressing should be illegal to do in public, and concealing your biological sex for the purposes of entrapping others should be punishable by death. Not because I don't like it, but because the Venn diagram of crossdressers and pedophiles is practically a circle.
And only by the grace of Allah can we absolve our sins, right? I've heard that song and dance before. Except, you know, that song and dance are both sicknesses and sin. You probably even use computers, when we KNOW that such things are sinful.
I don't understand why our civics education has failed so badly
Because it was removed from most public schools over a period of about 50 years beginning in the late '60s, natch, when public education was taken over by the left.

“… as long as it doesn’t hurt somebody else …” is where your logic and theirs conflicts. They consider words to be violence.
Not to mention that they consider harming others their birthright.
Well that is a unique "feature" of the left where somehow words got conflated with physical violence

More than a few states still had state religions after 1788.
