Don't forget that books were only burned in Fahrenheit 451 because they were deemed offensive, and people demanded them to outlawed.
Colored people don't like Little Black Sambo. Burn it. White people don't feel good about Uncle Tom's Cabin. Burn it. Someone's written a book on tobacco and cancer of the lungs? The cigarette people are weeping? Burn the book. Serenity, Montag. Peace, Montag. Take your fight outside. Better yet, into the incinerator. Funerals are unhappy and pagan? Eliminate them, too. Five minutes after a person is dead he's on his way to the Big Flue, the Incinerators serviced by helicopters all over the country. Ten minutes after death a man's a speck of black dust. Let's not quibble over individuals with memoriams. Forget them. Burn all, burn everything. Fire is bright and fire is clean.
This is more 1984 than Fahrenheit 451
The purpose of the re-write is to destroy the cultural significance of the original. And to force a political discussion whenever it is brought up.
I'm starting to think we need some kind of Archive of the Old Ways that saves literature, media etc from before the world went mad.
Maybe as a torrent so it can't really be shut down?
Can you believe the Taliban destroyed statues of Budha?
Surely this wouldn't happen in the US...oh wait they're doing the sane thing.
In the US they woulda toppled the buddha for being racissss
Yeah, destroying something leaves a hole, which would be noticed. Rewriting it poisons it, there is no hole left, but there is still something there.
Don't forget that books were only burned in Fahrenheit 451 because they were deemed offensive, and people demanded them to outlawed.
An archive of our own, perhaps?
