But then the millennium brought newer, more exciting choices. ... like ... TGI Fridays
LOL
“In the ’80s and ’90s, there was a low base of expectation; we weren’t as educated about food. From the 2000s onwards, cooking shows went crazy and cafe culture got bigger and bigger.
I live in LA. "cafe culture" isn't big and I don't even know what they mean by that. The only thing resembling "cafe culture" in the US is Starbucks.
People wanted healthier, fresher food and wanted to know where that food was coming from. Even kids’ tastes were becoming more sophisticated.”
hahahahahah NO. Plenty of fast food places are still super successful, and nobody gives a shit about the quoted text except for a small minority of hipsters.
Pretty much no restaurant food is "healthy" as a rule. Almost everything is frozen, especially that "omg so fresh it melts in muh moufff!!!" sushi that was actually sitting for 2 weeks in a freezer on a ship.
Mr Mallon said what might still be working in the US no longer translated to Australia. “We have higher education levels than the US and better knowledge access.
LOLOLOLOL Australians think they're posh? They're the black people of white people. They're the lowest class, trashiest non-slavic whites on the planet. They're the only white people who routinely chimp out even while not on drugs.

My late, great friend, Wild Bill Jones out of North Carolina, once told me that if you see a SYSCO truck making deliveries, find another place to eat. That rules out a lot of restaurants.
The weird thing is a lot of hipsters DON’T have money, or at least not their own money. For a lot of them, their pretenses of culture are killing their meager wallets, but it’s worth it to be able to look down on people who are as poor as they are but aren’t as clever as the hipsters are at hiding it. It’s almost British in the way classes can be separated by ostentation even if two people have the exact same amount of money in the bank.
Funny how they talk about how sophisticated Australians are versus the US as if these type places are on every corner in the US. Guess what, they died here for the same reasons too. We didn’t have Sizzler in my part of the country, they are a west coast thing. We had Bonanza and Western Sizzlin and they are basically he same thing. I haven’t been to one in probably 25 years. I can’t remember why we quit going to them, but they were well on the road to dying long before this gastropub cafe trend came around. Those places are for 20 somethings anyway where they have to drink gross IPA with every meal and eat the same old boring ass bar food.
Their steaks were/are shit. Especially at Bonanza. Ghastly thin little hunks of gristle like those we used to get in the college cafeteria back in the '70s.
Funny thing is, the last chain I ate a steak at was Outback Steakhouse, and it was a real steak.
I agree 100% with your take on IPAs and "gastropubs." Mozzarella sticks and "marinara" anyone? Bitter home-brewed ale with ridiculous flavoring agents added to cut the nastiness? Head on down to Omphalos Eatery and don't forget to wear your fedora.
I actually worked at Outback many years ago. I don't have any horror stories. Most everything was as it's presented to be. The meat and vegetables showed up fresh. About the only things that showed up prepackaged was like dry seasoning, maybe a few topping things, stuff like dairy products, etc. It's really not bad for a chain place.
Haha I have even worse than marinara sticks, I went to one of those such places for the first time in forever last weekend and we got some really bad expensive "cheese and crackers". It was pretty sad like some dried out crackers and tiny bits of some cheap exotic cheese cut up.
LOL

Sysco and US Foods are plagues in the industry. Those bitches will straight up operate your restaurant if owners hire them to.
This is the cherry on the shit sundae.
I know people talk about “class war” and “culture war” all the time, but that’s literally what this is, lol…
“Fuck your lower class cheap tastes. You’re not welcome here. Hipsters are just better than you. They actually have money, and class.”
This never ends well…
And yes, it was just a shitty chain restaurant. I get that, but it’s the trend, man, the trend…
Not everyone can afford, or wants to eat at, expensive “gastropubs” and “all day brunch cafés specializing in smashed avocado and almond lattes”…
If you do, good for you. But you should be able to choose alternatives, and not be sneered at, like in this article, for wanting to do so…
Eugh.
I will never respect the taste of people who spend $10+ on "avocado toast".

I simply want my own people to have a robust set of shibboleths that can be used to weed out the hipsters and tell them that they aren't welcome here.

“Steaks?”
We still have one singular eat-in Pizza Hut left, here, but I haven’t been in like 20 years…
Not sure about the salad bar situation there, however!
I was going to ask about “Bought house, before college??”, but navy, right..? 🤔
There’s no way most people do that under normal circumstances, at least here, anyway!
Unless you want to live somewhere fairly remote/shitty, or have a career change or something…
*admittedly I do know of a couple of exceptions to this, with couples who could afford the mortgage payments…
But they’re extremely rare, in my “age group”, lol…
