Saw it at the used games store and couldn’t resist.

Despite how (rightfully) the first and second season of SAO was lambasted as being bad (though I'll defend part 2 of season 2 to the death), from all accounts it got a lot better in a lot of the later iterations.
SAO Abridged does the first season better anyway, and hopefully the game isn't VR compatible...
what are you talking about? SAO season 1 is the landmark season that launched the whole isekai genre into mainstream popularity. it was a phenomenon.
If people talk shit about SAO season 1, it's only because edgy kids online think it's cool to shit on whatever is the most popular to prove how elite and snobbish they are. "Oh... you like MARVEL? Hahahahah it's so popular! You must be an idiot! Big brained geniuses like me only like experimental kidobukakke films from the 1970s. Oh? You've never heard of them. Figures. SMIRK I have the only copy." Yeah, ok buddy.
SAO's later seasons never came close to the impact season 1 had.
Season 2 with the flying elf shit was dumb. Major downgrade. The villain was stupid too and a laughably unrealistic cartoon who kept licking Asuna's face. They might as well have given him a mustache so he could twirl it.
I also think all the gun gale shit was dumb and the protagonist little pink girl was a waste of time.
Alicitzation or whatever was finally a return to "old school" SAO in terms of having a big, epic video game isekai plot. It was plenty weak in a lot of areas, but it was a lot better than all the stuff in the middle.
Alright guess I got to back up my claims:
Part 1of season 1 felt rushed, felt like it should've been longer trapped in the world but went 'and let's just skip it to they all get out now'
Part 2 of season 1 introduced the sister who loves her brother but acts like she doesn't, they then pull the 'it's ok turns out we're cousins' then there's the main guy who had to make him seem like a wannabe rapist then just stick with the valid 'experimenting with deep dive VR to affect people mentally' and possibly marrying to use her for corporate gain.
Season 2 starts better, has a PTSD storyline along with what happened to those that killed people in the game when returned to reality but then kinda ruined it for me with the 'mc op, he can cut bullets!'
Part 2 was a lot better for idea of someone with terminal illness using VR as an escape, that was very well written.
Haven't watched Alicitzation but from everyone I trust in their recommendations, it's good so might catch it later. I stand by that SAO Abridged is doing season 1 better just because they feel even better as characters BECAUSE they're all assholes.
As for Isakai, it actually hit a bit of a trench thanks to SAO as many rushed to copy so got stuff like 'In another world with my Smartphone' and the like. It's hitting it's peak now thanks to stuff like Mushoku Tensei and even Reincarnated as a Slime to the chill things I watch now like Farming in another world. SAO did get it more attention but it took years for it to hit it's stride.
I go by story arc. Arc 1 = Aincrad. Arc 2 = Fairy shit. Arc 3 = Gun gay. Arc 4 = Alicization.
I assumed the "season" numbers followed the arcs but I guess not. I was shitting on the Fairy Arc and Gun gay online because I thought those arcs were pretty dumb. And yes the whole "sister tryina fuck" fetish shit is cringe, and the main villain was over the top.
It has dumb shit in it but from a technical perspective it's the best season, though it's 47 episodes and basically half the total. It feels like the author put in more effort.
I can't stand the main character's voice. It's a grown ass man who sounds like someone just kicked a baby in the balls.
I really liked Hellsing Abridged, though. Goblin Slayer abridged is also good based on the MC's voice actor alone.
My GF hates Mushoku Tensei because the MC acts like a sex offender. He doesn't do anything IRL but his thoughts have really creepy hentai shit sometimes so she got disgusted with him and was like "fuck this guy". It didn't help that the show played up the "haha it's a middle aged man in a little boy's body who can totally fuck lolis 'his own age' and get away with it!" angle.
Most isekai are filler trash but they're the best filler trash. Most anime trash is unwatchable for me, but isekai trash is at least watchable because they come up with magic systems, combat mechanics, etc. Most of it is bad but sometimes there are interesting ideas.
Well, if anything was going to get me to stay far away from it, it would be this just before the horde of anime profile photos that pedos like to hide behind
Well we know it wasn't Gamestop because there aren't 12+ gaudy, grimy labels permanently bonded to the case.
Ha! True. It’s this local store by an arcade that markets to those who grew up in 80s and 90s
Sometimes pawn shops are a good place to find old games too.
Oh yea. And surprisingly thrift stores and used book stores
Friends dont let friends watch SAO
Really? I liked the anime. Or the concept was cool.
Excuse me, but I think the standard for showing off your purchases in this community is to upload your picture upside down.
Ha! I figured it out. For some reason when I upload with the phone it rotates. So I figured out how I have to hold so it shows upright.
I loved the anime and didn’t know there was a game
Ever see .hack? There's games of that too.
Still better than modern games, where you'll pay $50 for 10 gacha pulls, not even a story extension.
I didn't think they were that bad. While they didn't change from game to game it did do the whole "simulated mmo" thing pretty well. As someone at the time who had dial up internet and no chance to play an actual mmo it was pretty unique experience.
Cool! I also need to get the mangas
There're also four games before that (Hollow Fragment, Lost Song, Hollow Realization, and Fatal Bullet), plus a crossover game with Accel World.
Full disclosure, the games as a whole are generally the classic 3/5 "it's okay, only get it if you're a fan", but I've been an SAO fan since the original light novels (and, in my defense, I was younger and stupider at the time, but now I get to enjoy my trashy anime products with some well-worn, well-fitted nostalgia goggles), so I recommend checking them out if you just want more SAO-style anime silliness. Don't go into them expecting a great story, or super enticing content, or anything like that. It's pure fanservice (and with the amount of ahem DLC, it's fanservice in more or less every flavor) poured roughly into an RPG mold and allowed to cool in the blast chiller.
Well it was super cheap. I did like the anime and I plan on getting the Manga. Thanks for the heads up
Alicization? Does it have Quinella in it?
I've honestly heard nothing good about any of the swordplay SAO games, and I've only played Hollow Fragment as far as those go. Fatal Bullet (the GGO game) on the other hand, I've played and genuinely liked, and I'm pretty sure was agreeably the most enjoyable SAO-related game.
