Remember that it had to be as flagrant as throwing a Molotov at a cop car and being caught on video to get even this tiny amount of eyerolling "ugh fuck fine just because the freaking chuds are going to whine about it unless we do SOMETHING" fake punishment.

Did they actually go through any effort or was it just an automatic thing because of a felony conviction?

qualified for automatic disbarment based on their guilty pleas in June.

Yep, there we go. This is how little they care. They didn't bother getting a grievance or oversight or standards committee involved, they kicked the lawyers out because they auto-boot felons. A lawyer could get hammered and drive his car through a fence without hurting anyone (IANAL but I think property destruction automatically boosts a DUI to a felony), or sell bootleg fireworks on the side and he'd get the exact same treatment.

I suspect they'll wait long enough to be able to re-write history then let them back in for "standing against injustice" or some similar horseshit.

Oh no, the professional activists can't do their day job anymore. I'm sure they're feeling the sting of more free time for their passion: rioting.

Very cool, but- and just here me out here- what happens if you aren't a fancy upper class big nosed NY lawyer and you decide to throw a molotov cocktail at a police car?

It's about time.

This is a bit of a smoke and mirrors show.

It's automatic when a lawyer pleads guilty or is convicted of a felony. They can (and probably will) be able to get reinstated.

Can't have the protected class being held accountable for their actions.

I don't have much knowledge of how this works so to anyone that does.

Is this permanent or can they get it back at some point?

It can be permanent or temporary depending on the order of disbarment. I'd have to read it to know.

I knew a guy who got his law license back 25 years after being disbarred for taking bribes in his first job after law school. In his case, his disbarment said that he could reapply after 10 years. He did at the 10 year mark and they told him no and to try again in another 10 years. The second time around they gave him a 5 year probationary license which he managed to make permanent by not being a fuckup for those 5 years.
