Well, the idea being to see if they could actually deflect the orbit of a dinosaur-killer, the first part was successful. Now they have to wait and see if the crash actually affected the asteroid it hit, beyond giving it a new impact crater.
Everybody knows you have to have Bruce Willis lead a rag-tag group of wildcatters to drill explosives deep into the asteroid, but then Robert Duvall has to sacrifice himself so the rest of the group can survive with Téa Leoni
It has a deep impact on the world
The eagles show up after the asteroid hits?

This is the reason for the internet.
DAMN STRAIGHT!
So is this why we still don't have our Ion cannons yet?
Hopefully it doesn't actually knock it into our orbit.
The Wikipedia article about the mission.
Using an ion engine, no less.
Why didn't they send some of those feminist astronauts to land on it?
They missed an opportunity for an all female reimagining of Armageddon (a la Ghostbusters). Throw Brie Larson in a space suit and launch her straight into the asteroid.
Sounds like they did.
