There is a third, more animalistic theory: They sacrificed boys of prolific but conquered tribes. Similar to other pack animals, they would kill viable males due to being competition for their throne.
"We should respect the traditions of the Ancient Maya and incorporate them into our society. Perhaps these traditions will help us fight climate change." - women, when they find this out.
Hmm...more than you'd think, less than I'd predict, more than the normal person would like to believe.
It'd be a number that would be low as a percentage, but huge relative to what most would guess.
Something like a few hundred thousand, which is less than 1% of the population, but still a huge number in this context. More if you include women that don't have kids but would be willing to do it.
I've laid eyes on one of their best. I looked around for it at first because the temple itself was so unimpressive. The kind of thing you could easily see putting together with a hundred or so guys, let alone a slave army.
There's two ways of looking at this:
They valued men so little that the easily sacrificed them for a belief that had little merit
Women were baby factories so keep them to produce more things to sacrifice
I wonder why the people sided with the conquistadors very quickly when they arrived....

Ding ding ding.
The Mayan civilization had already collapsed. You're thinking Aztecs.
Those two ways are the same thing. The value a woman has is in baby-making. (to their minds I mean, not mine)

How many of these women of yours are going to volunteer their own boys?

That's actually a very reasonable answer (this part at least)! What happened to you?
He's remarkably self aware for a frothing-at-the-mouth sexist :D It's why I'm always so delighted he's here.
Yeah cause women have never killed their own children for political reasons.
There are plenty of women who will sacrifice their unborn boys for a Klondike bar.
This is fairly well known in history and archaeology circles, but I guess outside of it has been another story.
Even I believed the whole sacrificing a virgin thing and I doubt all stories of women being "oppressed".
I shouldn't be surprised that it's a lie. If there's one thing they're genuinely good at, it's lying to act like victims.
That's ok. The USA also teaches Aztecs offered up the losers of the big ball game, and not the winners.
"god said a virgin, he didn't specify it be a girl!"
