So I haven't had a chance to check out Japanese fan reactions on Twitter yet, but what I've seen so far makes me think this might actually be the creators' intention this time rather than something the "localizers" thought of.
They seem to be going for a rakugo performer thing which is traditionally male, but at the same time, the character has sarashi binding the chest only with an exposed midriff. While it's not unusual for a male character to wear sarashi, it would be rather unusual to have a male character using it that way.
Nintendo is trying to make their localizations closer to the original Japanese versions by forcing woke bullshit into the Japanese versions so that people with localized versions can't point to shitty woke localizers for ruining things. Much like other Japanese countries chasing those ESG scores and trying to "appeal to modern sensibilities".
It's only a matter of time until Japanese entertainment media is full of this garbage.
That franchise as a whole is just a fag indoctrination pipeline. No reason for us to argue with them over semantics when everyone should just be denouncing it as a whole.
(I did play Splatoon two, gameplay is fun, but the characters are designed very pedo-friendly like.)
