Just because some shitheads use the name of a previous work does not mean they have anything to do with it.
"Star Wars" 7 8 and 9 are not Star Wars.
The new "Lord of the Rings" is not the Lord of the Rings.
Don't let those who hate you pretend like they are the continuation of authors once respected.
They are skincrawlers; they use the name without any respect for the soul.
The reason they can do this is because Disney, back in the early 2000s, extended copyrights to last the entire length of the authors life plus 125 years, which they lobby to extend every decade; they now own everything forever. My suggestion of progressive copyright fees ($1 for the first year, doubling every year after) was, sadly, ignored.
The only cure for this crap is a widespread distain for copyright. We need fan comics/movies/games of popular IPs, even if most of them are bad, because they won't be worse than the licensed stuff.
Uh-huh, it's how you pave the way for a new Holy Book of Canon, that mustn't be messed with by the vulgate, and, of course, its narrative never questioned.
Frankly, I think a lot of what got passed down to us from ancient times amounted to "fan-fiction", while the priests, of course, tried to exercise their own primitive forms of copyright.
The Reynard cycle might be a good example of this; The Romance of Reynard is just a collection of stories that connect in a kind of narrative, while the bulk of the stories told at the time they were popular would have been mostly oral and just made up by townsfolk who liked the characters (and how they could be used to poke fun at the nobles and clergy.)
In short, I think Western society has been through all this before.
Agreed with the disdain for copyright!
I mean this post quite literally. It is NOT Star Wars, Star Trek, etc, any more than fan fiction is. The only thing that gives this sick practice power is that people believe that having 'the rights' to a franchise or property then gives this sick corporate fan fiction some kind of power. It doesn't! Still just garbage corporate fan fiction!
Nah, let dead franchises stay dead. New people will create new things.
Ditto for Star Trek. That one hit me hardest, to be honest. The Star Wars prequels showed me the OG movies were the only ones that mattered, but Trek's skinsuit is being paraded around year on year in the shape of flashy, entirely soulless movies and shows. I so wanted more Trek in my life, and this ain't it.
I like the prequels and at least with them I can appreciate that they were made by someone who actually cares. Can’t say the same for the sequels.
Agreed. The criticism of how boring the politics were, or the ridiculousness of Jar-Jar or even Anakin seem pretty minor compared to what we are dealing with today. The spirit of Star Wars was always there despite the mistakes. I think there was a seriousness behind the production, like an attention to detail, which is completely lacking in the modern films/shows.
They all have this strange modern sheen that does not fit what Star Wars is about. For example, the "shaky cam" visuals of the new shows, or the hardcore music. I see the stormtrooper outfits or the lightsaber battles and I know what it's supposed to be, but the wisdom is totally gone. There doesn't seem to be any deeper meaning behind it anymore. You just go from an abduction, to a chase scene, to a cool space battle, and there doesn't seem to be a point to any of it besides shiny visuals.
The prequels were garbage. Disney somehow being even worse doesn’t change the fact.
What is worse than no more trek? More """trek""".
My friends were genuinely surprised when I wouldn't stop ranting about how much I fucking hated Star Trek: The Undiscovered Lens Flare.
People bitched about ST: ENT, but mother of God, what I would do for just reruns of that and the Star Trek: The Animated Series to be the primary mechanism of selling Star Trek right now.
I can't watch any of the new STD's or variants thereof, it just makes me too annoyed, then too angry, then too embarrassed, and then too sad. Meanwhile, I'm literally getting teary-eyed listening to The Motion Picture's soundtrack.
There's something about it that's just stirring, a level of hope, optimism, adventure, comradarie, and principles that literally no aspect of any part of the political Left are even prepared to understand. They are at best, barely making an effort to appeal to those concepts behind a skinsuit, while being filled with nihilism, fragility, entitlement, resentment, and power-hunger.
It's interesting. I feel like the new Obi-Wan show is actually a Reva spinoff, but they knew no one would watch it if they openly made it about her so they had to call it Obi-Wan and put him in there to trick people into watching it.
She, and to a lesser extent, Leia, seem to be the main focus of that show despite the name, and despite the trailer being so focused on Obi-Wan himself. They always keep some familiar elements (like the red haired dwarf in Amazon's "LOTR") while pouring corruption on the majority of the show.
That’s because there is clearly a written mandate at Disney that every show and movie must give equal (or greater) run time to a female and/or minority character. If the program is ostensibly focused on a preexisting or legacy white male character, then that program must also launch a new female and/or minority. The list of offenders is so exhaustive that it must be the result of formal policy. The fans have started calling it “bait and switch”, which is accurate.
If it's so important to them, why don't they just launch new shows? It says a lot that they have to do a bait and switch. They don't even believe in the value of the BS they are trying to sell.
Bait and switch tactics. "Oh, that looks like it might be sort of digestible .." snap
And yet people who complain about it still go to see these bastardizations. That's what I can't understand. They lament the travesties these franchises have become, but there they are paying to see the movies, consuming the merchandising. I just don't get it.
It's fine if I see how bad it is wearing my prirate hat and eyepatch. Don't give them any money.
I guess humans are easy to bait.
Precisely. Just because some idiots refer to a previous work by name doesn't mean the garbage they produce has anything to do with it. People seem to be incapable of understanding this.
I know people who pay for Disney+ but dislike Disney and what they are doing to Star Wars. It baffles me. I pirate it to see what they are doing, but I'd never pay for this garbage.
Invasion of the Culture Snatchers
I hate shapeshifters too, man
Skin suiters would be a better name. They are wearing a skin suit of franchises.

Whelp, time to make our own then and stop asking the big companies to not rape what we liked.
Agreed, and then to never sell.
Bill Waterson had it right after he finished producing Calvin & Hobbes. Protect your property, and you will maintain it's cultural legacy.
