I recently got Tubi and I love it. If you don't have it then get it. It is a free streaming service (free due to commercials), but it does have a lot of older shows and movies. As someone who loves pre-woke British stuff they have a lot of that as well.
They have some anime and that is how I saw Fist of the North Star. I really enjoyed it. I am wondering was that based on a Manga or was it a totally original movie? I'd love to get more stuff related to it. Any recommendations for similar anime?
Thanks! I’ll check them out! What does musou mean? I’ve only seen it in reference to Dynasty Warriors.
You actually got most of the Japanese right. The only mistake is that it's "Shin Sangoku Musou". Sangoku means three countries while Sengoku means "a country engaging in civil war", usually referring to the Warring States period of either China or Japan.
... and then there's Warriors Orochi-- the "why not both" answer to the Sengoku/Sangoku question.
Don't forget the best one: Zelda Musou/Hyrule Warriors
Thanks!
HALLELUJAH AMEN PEANUT BUTTER
I hadn't heard of Tubi before now, but I'd rather get the DVD of it. Physical media will always be preferable to streaming, especially with how easy it is for them to censor content on the fly.
That’s true. When I get a house I’ll get more physical content. I do pick up DVDs at yard sales during spring and summer. I recently got Blazing Saddles
Exactly. I’ve loved the movie since I first saw it. That was the lesson I got.
While physical is obviously the superior way, Tubi is probably good for streaming. For the simple reason that they have a lot of classic anime (a lot of it stuff that has never been streamed before), and its free. So if they do start pulling shit like that, its quite easy to drop them.
Thanks for the suggestion. There's also retrocrush for also free streaming of older anime.
I’ve been looking for a free anime service
You can use MAL to search for an anime or manga. It also lists prequels, sequels, specials, alternative versions, and what it's adapted from (like a manga). This is a search for it's Japanese name https://myanimelist.net/search/all?q=Hokuto%20no%20Ken&cat=all. You can search the English also https://myanimelist.net/search/all?q=Fist%20of%20the%20North%20Star&cat=all
There's a 1984 TV show (with over 100 episodes), some 1980s movies, and some 2000s anime.
In additional to the games mentioned in a different reply, you might want to look at God Hand (PS2). It's not a Fist of the North Star game, but people who like the series might enjoy it as well.
I really appreciate it. Thanks!
I forgot to mention it, but there's also recommendations by users: https://myanimelist.net/anime/967/Hokuto_no_Ken/userrecs
The 2nd recommendation there, the first Berserk is a classic. Disregard the 3D follow ups.
You can also search by season of release, going back decades: https://myanimelist.net/anime/season/1984/fall
Greatly appreciated
Kenshiro has an endless supply of shirts haha.
There's a manga and also a TV series. Some games too.
It's pretty top notch. I enjoyed it as well.
I don't have much for similar anime, unfortunately.
Some of my other favorites, ninja scroll, ghost in the shell, made in abyss, naussica (almost all myazaki, actually), and dorohedoro were all good.
There is a ton of good anime; far too much to list.
Got anything specific you are looking for? Because I have been on an anime bend recently, but its a lot of newer stuff. On Tubi specifically though, if you have never seen it, I recommend Redline. Its one of my favorite anime movies ever, and I have been trying to find a DVD of it for a while now.
Oh man, had a look at the line up, GTO is in there, that shit is golden.
It has a manga (and sequel manga).
Any older sci-fi anime? Like Robotech?
I like Armored Trooper Votoms. It has a 1983 show and 3 later 80s movies. There's also a 1994 show and some 2007-2011 stuff. It has an old console game, but I don't remember if it's translated.
Robotech also used stuff from Southern Cross and MOSPEADA I have both on DVD but have never gotten around to watching them, so can't say if they are any good.
If you want more Robotech, the real version is Macross and there's 7 different series under it. Macross is the original (including the Macross Do You Remember Love movie). Macross Zero is good. Macross Plus, and Macross II Lovers Again I haven't watched, but seem fine. The rest lean much more into music/idols, including Macross Frontier which is good. I haven't watched Macross 7. Macross Delta has good music, but I stopped watching because idols standing on jet wings while they dog fight was too much.
For just older sci-fi:
Akira is a classic movie.
Dirty Pair (1985) is a comedic show about 2 female mercenary problem solvers. They have a high success rate, depending on how you interpret it.
Planetes (2003) is a show about people clearing debris orbiting earth.
It's been way too long to recommend, but you may want to check out: MD Geist (2 movies). Venus Wars (movie).
Thanks!
Cant think of anything older at the moment, but I got a newer one I like that is extremely well done called Eighty Six: 86. The premise is that a government built AI-controlled warbots to put down civilian uprisings, but the machines refused to stand down when ordered and are now attacking every human. The government then sends in the 86, who are offered citizenship in the government if they survive a tour of duty. But the government is racist against the 86, official they dont exist and no one has died fighting the warbots (called Legion). And its known that the final mission every 86 is sent on is a suicide mission, so that the government never has to uphold its deal.
The actual story follows Spearhead Squadron, which is made up of veteran 86 who are some of the most experienced, but have a reputation for driving their military handlers crazy (even suicidal) because they refuse to play along with the government line. Also, the little scorpion-like tanks they use (called Juggernaughts) are pretty badass looking.
Thanks!
Personally, I've been watching the original Kamen Rider (1971!) on PlutoTV (free/ads). Enjoying what I can.
Cool! I have Pluto as well. Will check it out.
Same here! Here they show all Kamen Rider eras here in Pluto (programming changes from country to country), even a shitty modern one called ZI-O. There's a whole channel that only plays Kamen Rider. They also have a channel for Tokusatsu in general that plays Jaspion and a couple of other metal heroes. All with original japanese audio and local subtitles (sadly because I wish I could watch the dubs I grew up watching). Tubi isn't available in many countries, but Pluto is pretty much everywhere.
I recently watch Kuuga on RokuTV, and Ryuki on PlutoTV. Honestly though, I think I have much more respect for the original as I'm watching it.
I got a Roku, but Roku TV isn't available in my country. Im not sure if it's possible to use any kind of VPN on a Roku device, but it'd be nice to be able to set my IP to the US and have access to more free streaming. I'm getting conflicting articles in Google regarding using a VPN on a Roku device.
I didn't know there was a live action. Was it bad due to not following the anime or was it just bad all over?
Wow. This makes me really appreciate the anime.
