Putin seems to be taking great care to minimize civilian casualties at the expense of a swift offensive. Zelensky is handing out guns to military aged males that have been prevented from leaving and intentionally placing military equipment next to civilian infrastructure such as schools. I'm not taking sides here and both of them are playing the game with the resources they have available, but from the outside Russia comes off as the more humane.

A country in an armed conflict can't join NATO. They were only in a ceasefire.
