Most-Recent Tone Deaf Response to Ukraine Crises award goes to: Mitt Romney. Claims 'the 80s called and no one picked up'. This from one of the founders of Vulture Capitalism, someone who takes over a distressed company, takes out massive loans, and sells its parts for profit. (archive.ph)

Doesn't matter what else he does, one of the most famous lines other than dogs on the roof (as opposed to in the belly) during his campaign against obama was when he was talking about how big a threat russia was, obama going "the 80s called lol, they want their foreign policy back"

What romney is saying here is "hah, I was right"

And...he wasn't. Russia isn't a threat.

It is if you’re anywhere in Eastern or Northern Europe right now…

Let alone all those NATO troops stationed around the place.

Imagine thinking America is the only place that matters… 🙄

Yes, fuck those people.

If they wanted to be able to defend themselves they should have built up their militaries instead of relying on ours.

If anyone believes that Ukraine was not set up as a sacrificial state eventually for Russia to take back if they so chose then they are a fool. The West has never had any desire to protect the Ukraine only their assets and that was a sacrifice they were willing to make if Russia ever decided to expand its borders once more. This was abundantly clear during the last time Russia expanded its borders and fought over pipelines with Ukraine. Even in the 90s when Bill Clinton was bloviating like a cow, Ukraine was being set up as a sacrificial lamb, a buffer zone to comfortably let Russia expand if they ever became a threat again.

Putin does not want Europe. Putin wanted the Ukraine because it gives him leverage over Europe and helps rebuild the Russian economy. The Nord stream pipeline was always just a pipe dream the real money and control was from Ukraine. If there is anyone who is being threatened by Putin next it is not Europe it is Turkey.

Didn't get clear in the title: Ukraine is a distressed country that Putin is taking over so he can sell its assets for profit. Ukraine is very rich in assets, very poor in politics. This will get him a great deal in investments even as the smoke clears.

Well in this instance, Romney wasn't wrong...

Ukraine was always doomed.
