Putin keeps making threats over the U.S.'s actions in eastern Europe. I really dont get what he has to gain in Ukraine. (www.nytimes.com)

Well, aside from plenty of good farmland in a better climate with more warm water ports, I can't think of a single thing.

Ukraine has been a nuisance when it comes to pipelines for so long they have built many around it.

It’s more to shore up his domestic prospects, i.e. to look tough, and appear to be “challenging US/Western European power”…

See: Crimea, Donbass, and Abkhazia and South Ossetia before that, lol… Also Chechnya…

This is kind of Putin’s whole… Schtick, tbh…

It's weird to see the West constantly extending its sphere of influence while simultaneously claiming aggression from everyone else. Real "the enemy cries out in pain as he strikes you" energy.

The NYT? Ranting about VvlaDdimiR Puutine? Oh noes let's all evacuate to the nearest bomb shelter.

Meanwhile in Beijing everything is surely smelling like roses to the news commanders at the Times.

You might know you're being manipulated when you post ginned up international rubbish from the NYT, purveyors of all things straight from the horse's mouth at the CIA.

As some have pointed out, it's to prop up his image domestically. Also, he's probably trying to squeeze concessions out of Biden by bluffing going into Ukraine.

Well, he's not entirely wrong. Biden needs a war because he's extremely unpopular. So he and his media keep pushing for one.

Apparently Ukraine is one of the major exits from the frozen hellscape that is Russia. If they don't control it, a large portion of russian trade is at the mercy of foreign countries.

That's the most charitable explanation I've found.
