"Gweilo” is a Cantonese term that translates literally to “ghost man” or “devil man.” The term has been historically used as a slur against white people that approximates to “foreign devil,” although it has been argued that the term has taken on more neutral connotations in present times.
Oh, well, if it has been argued then it must be true!
I would be predisposed to give her the benefit of the doubt if it wasn't for the last decade or so of trying to destroy people for saying things like, "catch a tiger by the toe" which you'd need to be a fucking grievance historian just to know why it's offensive. On the one hand this shit only further legitimizes outrage culture but on the other more important hand unilateral disarmament is not an option.
Speaking to Richmond News, Ho said his friends were confused about what happened at the store, as the Cantonese term has supposedly evolved over the decades. What was once a racial slur, he claimed, is now a “widely used and accepted” term “as a generic racial term for Westerners.”
“Even the Oxford English Dictionary's latest definition from 2016 states, ‘a person who comes from a different country, especially from the western part of the world,’”
if it did change, then they were woke to throw her out.
Ho and his girlfriend’s mother wanted to sign her up for a new cell phone number. One of the store’s staff members reportedly approached them and asked about the person who assisted them the last time they went to Shaw, to which the woman replied in Cantonese, “I think it's a ‘gweilo.’"
After their conversation, the staff member reportedly talked to the store’s manager, who happened to be Asian. Moments later, Ho and his girlfriend’s mother were asked to leave the store because she used a “slur.” The staff member explained that the term she used was “equivalent to the n-word based on his understanding.”
note how here no one was offended, nor even spoke the language in the encounter, so she was asked to leave based on a second hand interpretation of what happened. She did not call the person 'a white nigga' in cantonese, she described the person who helped as 'a gweilo'.
If it didnt actually change meanings over the years, its raycis, if it is a different meaning now, then its a woke overreaction on par with the niggars who get mad at hearing someone use retard.
If it just means "white man" then the sentence makes no sense. Two asians are approached by a white store employee and one of them says "I think it's a white man"? Seriously?

White people aren't looting and burning Shanghai over being called a gwailo, so it must not be that offensive!

I think we all know it used to be "catch a nigger by the toe" lol
Do we? I'm southern and didn't know until they started making a big deal out of it.
the problem isn't people saying naughty words
the problem is gigantic blubbering vaginas crybullying to cause harm to anyone who dares say a naughty word
we should work toward a world where everyone can use any word he wants without fear of being subject to economic, social, or physical violence
I'm with grandma. 'Gweilo' just means 'White guy,' 'nigger' just means 'black guy,' and 'kike' just means 'fair game.'
Cantonese speaker here.
Bak gwai = white ghost = white people
Hak gwai = black ghost = black people
We use these terms openly and casually.
are those at all related to gweilo?
Gwai lo just means ghost man. Cantonese is a pretty vulgar language hehe. Lots of cuss and profanity. So to us, its no big deal.
Whatever you say... Wong gwai, I think?
That's Japan.
Eugene Ho, the woke doctor?
Edit: Nevermind, that would be Eugene Gu.
I too am a fan of Dr. Ho's Miracle Belt.
