No idea about NatGeo but some of these magazines subscribe random people automatically (for free) just to get their numbers up so they can tell their advertisers they have X subscribers.
My grandmother recieved Chatalaine for years without ever having subscribed, and it continued to come a couple of years after she died (1980). If it was some kind of gift, we never figured out who would send it, and yes, I do remember her trying to communicate this to the magazine people, but it kept coming, even though we never paid.
Wasn't all bad, I guess, she did make a recipe or two from it.
Years ago I randomly started getting Complex (some hip hop rag). No idea why; zero interest in any of that garbage. Always went straight into the trash.
Someone subscribed me to National Geographic. :(
