My god, they had the thing fucking handed to them. Follow the anime tit for tat. There's nothing in that show that can't be green screen.
You had one simple job and you fucked it up. Congratulations.
They could have done that, sure.
They also could have gone the manga route and just do a bunch of self-contained episodes using the characters. Cowboy Bebeop lends itself extremely well to that kind of story telling and you could pretty much do anything.
Imagine the writing and effects from Firefly but in the Cowboy Bebop universe. We could have had that.
You could, but isn't it so much better to have your head repeatedly smashed with the social justice sledgehammer. I can't think of anything better, after all thinking is bad. The media told me so.
Budget for a full anime series. Reanimated all the scenes for 8K wide screen using the original audio. Re-release.

Well, that's evidence of the their problem right there. They declared tits bad, and had the actress portraying Faye publicly support their position. And the rest of the iceberg was below that.
