On the other hand, before the Poles there were Germans. And before that, as far as I can tell, it was disputed territory between several Indian tribes. The Poles themselves were filthy Catholics invading a nice Protestant town. 50 years is a long time over there in the US.
Not so much "disputed", as neutral, as the area on both sides of the river was pretty swampy when the French first settled the area. And my own grandmother described how Windsor's Giles Blvd E was just a creek when her family first moved there in the 1920s. The remnant of the Caroligian swamp it originally was can be seen at Point Pelee.
Fun little fact that people like to forget. Back in the 1980s, after most of the whites had been driven out after the 60s riot, and the election of Hizzoner Coleman A. Young, Mayor, the Arabs started to move into Detroit to fill the ecological niche of small shopowner. The blacks didn't like them any more than they liked the whites, and that's why all the muzzies moved to Hamtramck and Dearborn (while a lot of Orientals moved to Windsor, but in the 90s, when they had a turn at making a go of Detroit). Hell, they used to discuss this on the local news (and most of the people at channel 4 were there back then.)
And oh, I heard Detroit was having a turnaround, so I check to see who was mayor. Sure enough, the first white guy since Hizzoner ...

In 1900, Chicago was almost entirely white. The South Side was the the site of the famous Worlds Fair and home to many wealthy entrepeneurs. Many areas of Chicago around this time (and for the next few decades) were solidly Polish, Russian, etc. And yeah, there were conflicts between the "native" protestants and the immigrant catholics.
Starting around 1915, and lasting through the 1940s, there were massive waves of black immigration from the south. Neighborhoods had that been 99% white became 99% black in literally the span of 10-20 years.
Today the entirety of the South Side is largely black, with a few pockets of Poles, Latinos, whites, etc. If you grew up in a South Side neighborhood in the 1940s/1950s that was Polish and you went back today, the only sign of the past you might find would be a few street names and some crumbling churcges.
Or think about Boston. Boston was the heart of American protestantism--the Puritans, Congregationalists, etc. Today it's far more Irish Catholic, Latino, black, (etc) than anything else.
Demographic replacement replacement is common in America.
What is new is that, as the author of this piece notes, assimilation and "buying into" America's mission statement is not nearly what it once was. People used to come to America for a better life and for the ideals of the American way. Today people expect America to change for them in all too many cases.
Every elected official in the Michigan city of Hamtramck is a Muslim after the area’s population, which is just over 50 per cent Muslim, voted for themselves as an identity block. --- lot of people don't vote, myself included. Obviously if you're over 50% you're already in big trouble. but even 40% they could possibly do this if others split their votes or something. this is why democracy fails, just mob rule.
