I regret that I let a woman pressure finally pressure me into it in 2017, but I am still using that cheapest-android-phone-I-could-find-that-wasn't-chinese, and I will most likely be using it until the battery dies or the cell towers around me switch off their obsolete 3g signals - whichever comes first.
According to this article this is on the iPhone X and iPad Pro models with the A12X Bionic chip. They say it's for face ID and Animoji, but it generates a 3D map of a user’s face even when those functions aren't being used.
I assume it’s doing that in order to fulfill its mandate of knowing what you look like despite growing facial hair, wearing different clothing, etc. The more data it has on your face shape, the better. What did people expect? You use FaceID, how do you think it knows what your face looks like?
Now if you didn’t use FaceID and it was still scanning your face then that would be a news story.
I wonder... I know I can (and do) re-route my webcam data to just send a shock image gif when it isn't in active use, if you jailbroke your iPhone carefully, could you fuck around with that function and, like, give it bad data for funsies but still have it phone home that bad data?
given how hard it is to modify an apple product without tripping its im a brick feature good luck not going bald heard even replacing the volume button could do it
IR cameras are how eye tracking works. They are going to know when your eye travels to advertisements. That will be part of the cover story.
More importantly, they're going to know when you read propaganda. The 3d mapping will also watch your face for micro-expressions -- the same stuff body language experts look for -- to predict how credible you regard the source. Your phone will now know if you are an NPC or someone the feds need to pay attention to as a domestic terrorist who doesn't swallow official horseshit.
This feature is supposed to adapt to changes in your face over time. You grow facial hair, change your glasses, wear a mask, etc, but it has to work anyway.
How do they do that? Naturally by getting as much data about your face as possible. It would make sense to update every single time you unlock the device.
I’m not sure why every five seconds, but maybe because you might change your appearance in that time. (put a hat on or something)
Like I needed another reason to not buy another overpriced, invasive, spying device. At this point I'm considering going back to a flip phone.
For as long as you can still get one.
I'm honestly surprised that flip phones today aren't just dumb UIs written on top of a regular smartphone interface, spying and all.
Flip phone for life. I do not regret my hard line stance on this for over a decade.

I used to be fine with closed source software, until I discovered just how evil these software companies are.
Yes like Google with disabling “Location Tracking”, which to them means “for other apps”. Even Google engineers admit it is dishonest.
For me if I can’t even see the code I do not trust what you say.

why? seems like a waste of battery.
If I had to guess, it is either because:
Big Daddy government is telling them to do so.
It's basically free data so Apple will find a way to make money from it OR save costs for their more data-intensive projects.

That's the most charitable take possible.

This is why I like my glitchy android. Shit like this won't function because it's so poorly coded.
