Amazon is known for taking losses on their profit margin just to kill of competition or pursue a larger purpose.
Their retail sector was only generating 3% margins when I was in the ecom space back in 2013. The goal was completely own the space and gain prime members to push the additional more profitable products.
I would presume the value they find in it is to have an in-house for future productions for their own video empire. They do own a ton of movies too, perhaps just more to stack on Prime when you're competing with other major content owners. The money they spend on streaming licensing adds up quick.
Otherwise, who knows. I think it's way overvalued when you compare to what was a considered a crazy price of $4B for Lucasfilm that they've probably already made back even with the shit soup Disney has turned it in to. Then again, prices on everything are getting crazy now. Inflation is real, it's just not trickled down completely yet.
This does give them a studio, as you pointed out, for their in-house productions. They don't really have one and are hemorrhaging cash for stupid shit reasons and for garbage content.
You hit the nail on the head, though, when you said it was for licensing. They got in trouble because they have been streaming/selling digital copies for works they do not own. Starz had the license and sued them over it. A couple other companies did too. Buying the studio means they own the content.
I think think this is fantastic news. They will take much beloved properties remove what made them beloved and wear the property like a skin suit espousing their woke none sense resulting in the “woke wars” effect making said studio a net drain.
Eventually Amazon will be forced to sell at (relative) bargain basement prices. In a perfect world it gets bought out by a shit lord billionaire who proceeds to do 180 and pump out movies like the days of old but ratchet up to 11
The value in the purchase is definitely the back catalog. Amazon now owns the entirety of MGM's movies, meaning anyone who wants to have them on their streaming service (Netflix, Hulu, et al) now has to cut a deal with Amazon for licensing. Even if they do cut a deal, Amazon still has those movies as yet another draw for Prime Video fodder, or to potentially stick on IMDBtv to be ad-supported.
The problem is Amazon said they are going to "reimagine" all of the properties, including Robocop, Stargate, James Bond, Rocky.
You know what that means.
Either shit female protagonists, race flips or piss-poor reboots.
I'm leaning towards bad reboot attempts. You don't spend this much to fuck everything up.

Less story more explosions!
Diverse characters by the boatload all with 1 line each but 10 pages of wiki lore
I was so annoyed they turned Dr. Who and John Constantine into woman.
Step 1: Buy cultural history.
Step 2: Rewrite cultural history.

The amount of money Amazon is spending on this deal makes me very worried. What is their plan? Do they own any big franchises other then James Bond?
James Bond is already going woke with black female 007 so I do not care if they take that one.
Why do the globalists want so badly this studio when they already directly and indirectly already influence all the studios including MGM.
Maybe so they can slap a more respected "MGM" logo on the shit they turn out instead of the generic "Amazon Original" brand they have now?
This is the obvious motive.
Trying to corner the market of old people streaming in their retirement homes?
I read it was 14,000 television shows..... Sounds like something.
I'd think The Wizard of Oz alone would be worth quite a bit.
Amazon-MGM is pleased to announce
THE WIZARD OF POZZED

Retroactively redefine pop culture in the woke image of today
Seems like an attempt to edge in on Trump's businesses too. Expect MGM's real world businesses to start breaching contracts with Trump's company.
They got it so they can erase the white Christian ethics from history.
