I wasn't in the "something seems off" camp, but now that they're trying to claim that a couple extra tugboats and excavators digging on the shore has resolved what they had claimed might be a several-week effort, "something seems off".
If you ever have to give someone a time frame resolving a clusterfuck, the smartest thing to do is to give them your estimate of the worst case scenario.
Remember: If it takes you longer than you said it would, you're shit at your job, but if you get it done in a fraction of the time you claimed, you're a hero and obviously they don't pay you enough.
Scotty from Star Trek would be proud.
It's pretty much the way you have to do it, considering the shit way humans are, and if you don't do it that way, you're not smart enough to deserve a human job that pays money. Always pad your time estimates.
As a former retail computer repair guy, one of the quotable bits of wisdom I have in common with an engineer friend is this: "Whenever you get or give an estimate of money or time, double it. Then double it again. If you don't, someone is going to be disappointed."
this guy politics
There was also some kind of super moon high tide that came in to help the float.
The celestials themselves come to the aid of global consumerism!
It wasn't "a couple extra excavators".
They brought in a couple suction dredgers. Those things are capable of moving material a lot faster than power shovels.
From what I saw they pulled it with tugs and bulldozers, dug with bulldozers, sucked with dredgers, AND had a tide in their favor.
That level of effort and luck probably wasn’t even a thought when initially scoping the timeframe. Pretty impressive work
I saw one story where an official said they expected to get it out over the weekend.
