I realized the alien thing was bullshit when the head of Israeli NASA said there was a galactic federation that was leaving us alone because of nukes and violence. Not only is that straight out of SG-1 and other SciFi, keeping the unholy xeno away from us is exactly why we should keep the nukes.

And Q is my favorite character, because he is to the Federation what the Federation is to all the other civilizations; and they hate him for it. "Oh you think you're in a position to lecture others? Well I just came back from my visit to this ancient civilization whose ruins you are excavating, and I think later I'll take a stroll on the surface of this star the planet's orbiting."
I suppose it would be for control. You know, "Scientists have derived these aliens, you couldn't possibly observe yourself, are going to annihilate us all. They believe the aliens will spare us if everyone wears a neon green codpiece to show the aliens we want peace with them. You don't get the freedom to endanger others by choosing to not wear your codpiece. Scientists are the experts on this you must not question them."
However, I guess they don't need more control at this point. I'm probably also stretching to find something else to discuss than the current prevailing topics here.
