Hate to break it to you, but Millenials make up the largest Facebook user base in the US, Canada, Europe...and Australia. Boomers make up less than 15%.
That's like saying millenials are the largest user base of bebo (currently dead, yes planned revival).
As for boomers making less than 15% only because they're now the dying generation.
Both of you also forget that GenX exist and use FB too. (guarantee a lot will claim the meme of "we don't do mainstreeem" but remember they're 40 somethings now.)
Media Bargaining Law - "the code would create an arbitration panel to set a binding price for news in situations where Google and Facebook do not reach deals with media businesses whose original journalism they link to" (freespeechcentrist2 link).
You might dislike me but this makes it clear Facebook IS in the wrong.
It seems before this law, for Australian news outlets, Facebook could and did, rehost Australian news and "deign" to pay a paltry amount in return.
Ie Facebook said "this is our payment per click. We're not budging. Yes we know our eyeball count is essential".
The bargaining law, means that Facebook now has to atleast sit at the bargaining table to discuss payment prices with news and media companies and instead of hosting anyway on a poor click payment if the deal fails they'll be forced to.. Gosh not host someone else's content. Or they'll have to actually negotiate in good faith for a fair deal.
If every media company in every region had this law yes they could be more aggressive for their "shite fortified news" but then this law could apply to other media platforms. Facebook will no longer want to pay higher rate clicks necessarily... Ie seperatijg leftwing media from FB pocket.
At first I too went fuck the media/FB did nothing thing wrong BUT.
Look at what it meant facebook could do without it, some was logical "hey you're a little company with barely any pull, we're going to give you our crap click rate payment"....
Or the more sinister.. "we don't agree with your company politically. We're forced to host you atleast. Crap click rate payments. Oooh hello Left wing established media! AALL THE CLICK PAYMENTS!"
By going against Australian government and the Bargaining Law you're effectively allowing Facebook to set the payment rates and fucking over people's ability to bargain with it.
You may hate media... You should hate FB for this more.
Edit: this post was made under assumption we all agree facebook is a publisher, not social forum and ergo content hosted by media companies means they should have a right to set their own fees if Facebook chooses to host their news anyway. (which we know it is but avoids taxes and negotiation by claiming its not)
If its the assumption that FB is a social forum, then the inverse applies all content media should be applied evenly regardless of politics and all should receive the same click rate (which we know its not and does not pay a flat rate, its known to bias payments not just by audience reach but political bias)
Oh no, now how will I get my editorialised propaganda now? Go right to the source, devoid of any and all fortified context? The horror!
facebook hasn't blocked archive.is, and I bet non msm sources aren't blocked.
makes me wonder what nightmare level shit is about to go down in Australia.
Nothing. The government wants FB and co to pay up for the articles they promote. This is just them trying to avoid paying.
The one time 4chan users and facebook power holders agree on something: ban Australians.
Hide Aussie threads
Ignore Aussie posts
Do not reply to Aussie shit-postsers
Facebook going in large.
But somehow it seems counterproductive to ban your own audience? Wouldn't that reduce the number of users? Just conclusion leaping here.
I cannot imagine why anyone would seriously use facebook as a news source anyway.
Less counterproductive than being billed by the Australian government for every Australian news link posted on your site.
The boomers that are still using FB are the same people that still consume MSM content
Hate to break it to you, but Millenials make up the largest Facebook user base in the US, Canada, Europe...and Australia. Boomers make up less than 15%.
Userbase. != actual active users.
That's like saying millenials are the largest user base of bebo (currently dead, yes planned revival).

They're not reducing their number of users, they're isolating them within their network.
As impossible said, they simply want them to pay revenue on ads/promoted content and they're skirting the rules on it.
It's like the Chinese version of Facebook, but for Australians!
facebook called their bluff.
Facebook avoided paying taxes.
yeah, baseless ones.
So Australia acted like reddit and 4chan mods do and it went poorly.
I'm really excited to see how this will play out.
This is one of the rare times where Facebook isn't the villain.
Emergency services could have news on them. In fact, they OFTEN do. They're covering their asses.
It's not something I get to say often, but Zuckerberg Did Nothing Wrong.
because of my content, you are receiving visits on your websites, pay me a little.
VS
because my website you are getting views for your content, thank me a little.
the final battle.
