To be fair, evil leeching workers who dare live outside the glorious city of Deadmonton is also a go-to argument for their (ostensibly) male mayor, especially when he feels like annexing large parts of Alberta into his domain.
To provide context: This mayor wants to collect taxes from people that used to work in an area that would have had them paying taxes into city coffers but now that they're working at home, they do not do so.
My question is - once you've established that you're due taxes for providing no benefit whatsoever why stop there? Have you at any point worked in MI? Travelled through MI? Visited friends there? Changed job since then? Too bad - now cough up, sunshine, or there'll be a bench warrant waiting for you the next time you go to the city.
This is actually worse than that. As far as I can work out, Mayor Bliss wants your personal tax dollars if your company operates in Grand Rapids, MI, whether you are there or not.
I recall a similar bullshit balloon being floated by the mayor of a city in Europe somewhere. I think it was in Germany, but I can't find the article. Basic upshot was the same, though - because workers weren't in the city making use of the infrastructure, the magistrate wanted to levy a tax on them to equal the estimated taxes they would have paid by using public services, restaurants, and the like. I remember seeing that article and thinking, "bastard, you can't have it both ways - either your city is shut down and you take the hit like every business owner does, or you open it back up and deal with the ramifications of that." It's just another case of politicians wanting to have their cake and eat it, too.
I thought the justification behind city income tax was that workers use the city's infrastructure, so they should contribute to it's upkeep. Since they're no longer using it, they should no longer be paying towards it.
Of course, the real reason is that the city's in Michigan. With so much being shut down for so long, the city is probably hurting for cash.
Once again proving that we need an electoral college stateside, hell maybe even local, No taxation without representation. I don't understand why people put up with this bullshit, and yet they continue to vote Democrat.
Doing the Lord's work.

What’s that? Never go to Michigan? Already on it.
New York City does this. Go to New York on business for a day and you're supposed to pay them income tax for that day.

Why suffer from your own policies when you can exploit non-residents! Something something colonialism!

Deustche Bank wants governments to tax stay at home workers 5%.
Well, Detroit used to issue traffic tickets to plates that had never been in the city ....

I love how their solution to everything is exorbitant taxes in a country that started a Revolution over them.
I got a better idea. How about we set off a neutron bomb in the center of each major city.
