I think you're assigning more motivation to Islamists than they have. Like if I thought a society needed to be destroyed and replaced with my beliefs, I wouldn't start by killing criminals, that'd come after as part of the clean up
Why would I attack the people supporting me? I’m not in control yet, I don’t have the power yet. Even if I find them abominable, I wouldn’t want to reduce the number of people that actively run cover for me from my enemies that aren’t fucking stupid. I’d start wiping the useful idiots out once I’m king.
Some of the 'rainbow brigade' in Europe are waking up (e.g., me), because even as they may not be targeted by terrorists - ordinary Muslims are less held back in how they treat Alphabet Soup person.
These people really see no difference. They really believe that anyone that supports the president of the US is a monster that is out to kill them. Not worthy of any empathy whatsoever.

Once it is demonstrated that these people, and their opinions, represent a fairly small minority, they’ll start losing steam.
That's one of the things I cling to for at least a tiny piece of hope that it can be fixed if enough people see that these groups that essentially call themselves the bolsheviks (literally the majority) just aren't a majority at all. I'm not sure it can happen, but you know for my own sake I have to give myself at least one positive outcome to think about.
