I can get why they're spooked by him. The guy is unbelievably energetic and seems dedicated, has had some positive effects, and the idea that a very wealthy right-wing sincere Christian exists probably scares the hell out of them.

The Jack Murphy thing has one silver lining: anyone who defends him or tries to come to his defense can be decisively regarded as worthless and who can't be trusted.
Even before this, the guy was shit. But now he's been exposed as a degenerate who will do anything for money, no matter how degrading it is to himself and others. Anyone who says "Come on guys, give him a second chance" is either stupid beyond belief or compromised. The only way to "forgive" Murphy is by letting him leave the entire conservative shill movement in peace and enter some other field.

Gab may be shitty, but at least it's got a big enough population, and it works decently enough. The fact that there's a lot of people there and you can speak freely with minimal concerns about being shut down for what you say is a huge plus. Telegram's great as well.
A big problem with Gab is that it's almost entirely a political place, whereas Twitter is a main/general communication place. There's artists, there's socializing, there's news. You could strike all the political shit off Twitter on both sides and it'd still have value. Not so for Gab.
This guy is repulsive enough that I'd distrust anyone who so much as tries to come to his defense or says people should "give him another chance" because "we all make mistakes" or someshit.
Everything about this guy reeks of him not only being scum, but being the sort of scum who gets off on manipulating people in the worst ways.
Because a large part of the reason for these mandates was the highest love of the left: political taunting. They know the people who dislike the rules the most tend to be on the right, ergo, these rules are totally 100% essential (ignore the fact that so many people just flaunt them whenever they want.)
For someone as leftist as Trudeau, he'd probably rather cause a lot of actual death than have this result in his political enemies walking away feeling as if they won anything at all.
