Not a thing in Aus, interestingly…

I would say more than half of the movie trailers I see are foreign-language, probably solidly a third of the total shown on linear TV are subtitled, and they’re one of the few things I still go to the cinema to see (but I love European and Latin cinema, which, I suppose, makes me the target demographic).

One of the local multiplexes (in the most “multicultural” area) even shows regular Bollywood films, meaning there’s obviously demand for that. So… That’s definitely not the case here.

Sweden, as far as I could tell, was fairly similar. Though I focussed on film festivals and premieres, while there, so I’m not 100% sure what it’s like during “normal” times.

They seemed to like their arthouse stuff just as much as Aussies do, though. So I guess this more of an American thing…

Like a really shitty AR version of GTA or Duke Nukem or something, lol...

Except that sadly he faced approximately the same level of consequences (zero) as in one of those games, which is... Disappointing, for the real world, and where we appear to be heading.

Yep, totally agree with you there, on all counts.

Palestine... Used to be a fairly "liberal", developed part of the Islamic world. Especially Old Jaffa and Jerusalem itself.

Then the Jews took over, and, well, we know most of the 75 years since then...

Palestine now, or more specifically Gaza now, is not that. Parts of the Palestinian West Bank are relatively "normal" for the Islamic world, much like parts of Iraq, Lebanon or Iran are (there's even at least one brewery in Ramallah, I believe). But Gaza, as controlled by Hamas and constantly bombed by Israel, is an oppressive, theocratic, overpopulated shithole.

The problem is that Israel wants it to be exactly as much of a shithole as it is, because it provides an easy "enemy on the doorstep", among other things.

Israel basically created and funded Hamas, and (arguably) allowed October 7 to happen, or at the very least ignored every possible warning about it, and now, here we are...

A bit like how Netanyahu and his cabinet couldn't give less of a shit about the hostages. They're just a convenient excuse. That's become increasingly obvious over recent months.

Yeah, I find that very odd...

Like, that's absolutely a rookie-tier error, at best.

As if you would be so stupid as to have that as your only copy, if that is what he is claiming/implying, here...

I mean, to her credit, the woman at the very end (and perhaps a couple of the others) looked genuinely scared of what he might do...

I think that plays a very significant part, here. And I presume that they could see the camera phone he is holding, too, so... There's that as well.

Notice how the other black guy is the only one who didn't give in (though admittedly, that was food, rather than a drink)...

He knows the game, and knows that this piece of shit is all bark, no bite.

The others are, unfortunately, all too scared to resist/fight back...

Wait, why did he lose his computer/digital work, as part of this..?

I find that a very confusing part of the video, tbh...

Yeah, it’s not that I disagree with the campus protests in principle. But demanding that the University brings them food, attacking people who ask them questions, and generally having no idea what they actually want… Just makes them look like loons, as you say, or rent-a-crowds…

Port Arthur Historic Site in Tasmania used to do that (but way before AI). You would be given a card with a convict’s name on it, then you could find out their story in the interactive museum as you went in, and then look for related places around the wider historic site (former penal colony), including with “holographic” projections and stuff, to tell “ghost” stories…

It was actually really quite effective, at helping “personalize” the experience, and I assume you got to keep the card afterwards.

Sadly I doubt they still do it, nearly two decades later and especially after Covid…

I mean, I hate the Israeli government with a passion, and have been to Palestine rallies previously, and even I find the current campus protests, and what happened in Malmö, to be both absurd and distasteful…

Which either means I’m getting old, or the Overton window has shifted on this issue…

For context, I refuse to even buy Max Brenner chocolates or Sodastream products, because of the IDF connections, but I still don’t find the current tactics of that movement to be either logical or appealing…

Similar thing happened with the VR/mixed reality parks on Australia’s Gold Coast, including the horror-themed ones…

Unfortunately they just don’t seem to be as popular with the only two groups of tourists/attendees that investors care about: internationals from Asia (mostly China and India) and hipsters, who only care about shit like “authentic cuisine”, “curated, bespoke experiences” and crap like that…

Interestingly, this is one thing that Sweden, Finland and Denmark do pretty well.

Skansen (folk park in Stockholm, where I spent NYE) is amazing, as is, in a very different way, the “A World of Games” exhibit currently on in Gothenburg.

Would recommend either to anyone who gets the chance to go there.

Sort of. She's just a protestor for hire, at this point.

I've met Greta. She has graduated from "this is my whole cause and I will die if you don't stop it" to "I will protest for/against whatever is trendy right now".

But I also don't agree that protesting against/blaming the Israeli performer helps in any way. It just looks like a massive self-own.

Is it hypocritical that Israel is there, and Russia/Belarus aren't? Sure, but blaming the artist who has nothing to do with any of it achieves absolutely nothing positive, and just plays into Hasbara's hands.

Both sides can be wrong at the same time, as here.

We have 767s flying out of Aus, internationally (sadly no more 747s, and I've never seen a 757)...

They're rare, but I've been on at least a couple in my time.

The Qantas 747s a decade ago were the bomb. They were, unironically, fucking great. Which is part of what makes it so sad that they got rid of them...

Is Amtrak an option for you, instead..?

I realise that it's slow, expensive (I think) and not always very good, depending on area, but if I was only going a few states, to cities covered by it, I would use that...

Crappy as I'm told Amtrak is, it is unironically considerably better than most of the rail network in Australia (where it even still exists, these days)...

Ah, I see...

Similar concept in Star Wars, which I am more familiar with.

Although for some reason Star Wars uses panspermia (Humans and Mandalorians both originate on Coruscant), and the criteria is mostly "can they interbreed and produce fertile offspring", rather than any ethical concerns...

Obviously Trek tackled these things, too, but I feel like that is too complex for me to bother reading up on, lol. And it seemed to flip flop depending on the series/era, too.

But I admittedly had not heard of the Star Wars test. Makes sense, though.

I suppose we could add Battlestar Galactica to this discussion, except that in that instance they are cyborgs rather than aliens. Man do they ever bone a lot (in the new series, more so than the old one), though...

They would indeed say something just like that, however they probably know that they wouldn’t live much longer after doing so, lol…

Ifthikar means she’s a Paki, if anyone is curious…

Old wealthy Northern Paki (Islamabad region) surname. With military connections.

I used to know one very well.

Strange guy.

I think everything from Tom Baker (and maybe even almost all of Pertwee) is in existence, so it’s not too bad if you stick to that era on.

Doesn’t mean it’s all good, necessarily, but from the late 60s through to the early 80s, it has a pretty good, intact run…

Yeah, I’m most definitely a societal outcast, and I’m one of those dreaded “straight white males”, lol…

Still waiting for my privilege bonus to land in my bank account, tbh.

Also Martha was attractive. That helped.

I found Martha’s mother excruciating, but that was more to do with her being a Karen, than her being black…

What’s the Harkness rule, lol?

I also found Clara pretty hot.

Not everyone seems to agree, but for me, Clara >> later Amy (at least in looks).

Also less River Song, which for me sealed the deal. I really disliked that character, by the end, lol…

“Locked because y’all can’t behave!” wins once again…

Just as the reasonable comments were starting to gain traction, too, smh…

Much as I completely hate this idea, that is by far my favourite episode of that show, lol.

Crazy to see the idea that it is literally trying to warn us against become reality this quickly (at least in the mind of this idiot Bumble woman), though...

Ha, well, it was one of the few “moments of light” among an otherwise pretty damn awful voting section of the “show”…

But honestly, it’s Mother’s Day here, and I really do not enjoy this day (obligatory luncheon and all), so… At least Eurovision gives me a chance to “day drink”, lol…
