You should always know your target and what's behind it, and randomly popping off shots is a good way to hurt an innocent bystander. Fire into the dirt on your lawn, or barring that have a starter pistol with blanks for the warning so you're not firing against concrete and risking a ricochet.

Forget how much of a bad idea warning shots are from a legal standpoint (a prosecutor will hammer on the point that you weren't in "imminent bodily harm" if you had time to fire off a warning), what makes you think a warning shot will scare away a mob of angry felons with nothing to lose and looking for an excuse to hurt you?
