There's a pandemic, everyone's been shut in for months and most outdoor entertainment has been stopped. People have little to do but watch TV. And even then they manage to lose almost half their viewership. Good going!

The NHL playoff ratings would be good for comparison. Both leagues starts in the fall and (normally) have their playoffs in the spring. The main difference is that the NBA has fully embraced BLM but about 90-95% of NHL players are ignoring politics and just playing the game. A comparison in their TV ratings would be interesting, but I haven't been able to find them.
I watched or listened to nearly every Spurs game from 2008 through 2016, and watched nearly every playoff game from 2012 through 2016.
Gregg Popovich then came out and called Trump the big bad Orange Hitler, and I haven't watched a single game since. Sucks, because I wanted to see Kawhi Leonard's career even if he wasn't a Spur.
I don't even know who's in the playoffs at this point. I didn't even know that the playoffs had started. It's amazing how easy it is to shut this stuff off and never look back.

MLB and MLS are both doing well after coming back. I'd almost say NBA is having a unique problem.
