Thoughts on the LOU2 success?
posted 5 years ago by hd12345 5 years ago by hd12345 +16 / -0

The LOU2 is somehow the 3rd highest grossing game on the PS4 (https://metro.co.uk/2020/08/17/last-us-part-2-third-best-selling-ps4-game-us-13138958/) despite is questionable quality and bad publicity? Why do you think this is? Do you think this will effect the game industry or not?

Pre-orders.

Naughty Dog is held in cult-like esteem among many Playstation fans, they waited for this game, they weren't going to let any bad publicity sway them.

It was always going to sell extremely well no matter what.

What would be more interesting is to see what percentage of the people who bought it disliked it after playing

It's never 'the bad ones' sales you need to watch like Archie78 said most will have been traded in by now...it's the next one, that's where you'll see the disdain.

How many of those purchases have been traded in already? I can't see it having a major effect as fucksticks like druckmann are entrenched pretty much everywhere, although I fervently hope that Churchill's sentiments are echoed here "this is not the end, nor is it the beginning of the end, but it is ,perhaps, the end of the beginning"

The Last Jedi also did pretty well financially.

But 3 years on who really looks on it favorably?

It also had a ripple effect on Solo's release. The damage from TLOU2 will be seen in the sequel.

The same thing that happens with mainstream media and indoctrination happens with non political things and the masses..... most people dont know where to find the truth for themselves due to supression in say search results or gas lighting by activist 'journalists'.... kind of like an abusive relationship so what happens is people stop being sceptical of what they are told and become sceptical of their thoughts and feelings when they go against the narrative.... I mean I think I got redpilled like most people here in the 2014-2018 timeline and there are still times I question myself because of what I used to believe.

With that being said abuse can only last so long before people break, so ID bet hard currency that if there is a TLOU3 then sales wont be half....

I think a large amount of people don't pay that much attention to gaming journalism for one and then you've got the large group who do but are leftists. The original was loved by so many people that I think didn't know better about buying the sequel. Hopefully at least quite a few that played it were super unhappy with it. I know I've seen reports from Japan that it was available used in huge quantities very soon after release--if that's any indication.

I never understood the hype anyway. For years I hadn't played the first one and once I finally got a PS4 I was all geared up for the "best game ever". No, just no. I didn't mind the story in that game but they forgot to make it any fun. I actually traded it in and that's not something I do much anymore. I remember the person at the game store asking me if I was hyped about TLOU2 (before any of the leaks) and when I wasn't you'd have thought I killed their puppy. They could have made the sequel about me saving a little girl from Hillary's "suicide" crew and going back for revenge and if the gameplay was the same at best it would be "meh" for me.

That couldn't be more true. I have completely changed the games I seek and go backwards to play a lot of stuff I missed just because the whole concept of everything must be a 100hr open world or an interactive B movie has just gotten not fun. I used to argue with people on different Reddit subs as they would go on about how important it is for a game to have a deep meaningful story that really makes them feel something. I guess I just want to feel like it's fun.

That's certainly fair. I'm all for variety in games and others liking different things. I finished the first TLOU so at least I liked the story/characters that much. If I were to give another PS4 example I liked God of War much more. The story characters, serious moments, humor, etc all just appealed to me more and I liked playing it. But I've seen it's story criticized as too cliche and boring.

I don't trust the numbers the media gives me about a bioweapon that has wiped out the global economy. Why would I believe a PR company using unverifiable methods, whose explicit job is to lie and manipulate people‽

We'll not see the "damage" TLOU2 did until they release a new one, it sold well because of the first game, but that doesn't mean people liked it.

Goodwill from the first, release during a quarantine and honestly it’s not a “bad” game. It’s nowhere close to the first in terms of being like something special, but as a generic zombie game it’s pretty okay. A zombie Kane and Lynch imo

I doubt Part III (if there is one) will ever reach the heights of the first game, much less the second. I mean, where else can the story go? People hate Abby, and now they hate Ellie for cucking herself out of revenge. Unlike the first game's ambiguous ending that spawned some debate about whether Joel was in the right or if Ellie actually believes his excuse, no one fucking cares what happens after the end of Part II nihilistic ending.

If you look at Gamstat, the player count on TLOU2 is already flatlining. God of War (2018) has already blasted past TLOU2 in player count. This is in spite of God of War "only" launching with 3.1 million units sold vs. TLOU2's 4 million launch.

Thought I should have a quick look at how its doing on Amazon Japan. 3/5 but all the recent reviews seem to be 1 or 2 stars. Below is the top flagged comment along with a tweet the reviewer posted from Druckman https://imgur.com/gallery/2BawWQE

Basically says that they made the mistake of preordering based upon last game and won't be doing that again. That the people who made it did it for money not love of the characters (I disagree with that, it was ideological but Japan doesn't really understand the SJW infection) and says that he paid for a game not someone's self-satisfactory masturbation :)

Lots of other reviews just like that.

Edit: Read through a few more and, sad to say, there are also a similar amount of 5 star reviews (hence the 3/5 score). It seems like those who love it here are just huge fans of the original and are happy to revisit the world even if the characters are screwed over. Many seem to find the theme of the futility of revenge to be the game's strong point and don't really comment at all on man-monster Abby.

Third highest grossing, but how much of a profit did it actually make? We gotta remember this game had a long development cycle, numerous delays, and a high turnover rate with its employees, getting to the point where they had to hire workers from the film industry after burning out everyone else. All of this has to add up, and unless the game had a truly explosive sales reception, I don't know if it really had that good of a return on investment.

Things might be alright for Naughty Dog right now, but I think their days are ultimately numbered. Journalists might be willing to suck the dog's cock, but TLoU2's development has tanked the company's reputation among actual game developers (hence why they had to resort to film animators), and few of them are going to want to work with ND in the future. Which means any future projects, whether they're TLoU-related or not, are doomed to have hellish working conditions, which are only going to make the games even more expensive to make. And that's not even taking into account the fans who have been burned by TLoU2 and will not be returning for the third entry (or possibly any Naughty Dog game for that matter).

Naughty Dog also hired MUSO TNT LTD to file false DMCA claims on their behalf. That also costed money.

We need to wait at least a year or more to see what its legs are like (presuming we even get numbers).

Take the first one on PS3 for an example. It sold 1.3 million worldwide in its first week, hit 3.4 million after three weeks and then 7 million after 14 months. Its PS4 port did 1 million in its first month and combined with the PS3 version is now at more than 20 million (though a good chunk of those would've been bundled sales since it was bundled with both PS3 and PS4 consoles in various regions (both officially by Sony and unofficially by retailers)).

So far we know TLOU2 sold 4 million in its first three days, and it's sold enough in dollar sales by mid-August to be the third highest-selling PS4 release in the US (not too surprising since it's a major IP and hasn't been heavily bundled like Uncharted 4 was), but we haven't gotten concrete sales figures since.

Like others here, I don't think it'll be a financial failure, but I think it'll do damage to both future entries and future Naughty Dog games in general.
