Look at the second reason why you shouldn’t preorder GTA 6 (media.kotakuinaction2.win)

This game is going to do irreversible damage to the gaming industry as every company rushes to implement these extremely greedy subscriptions and a deluxe edition that is basically the full game. I can’t wait for more Ubisoft slop that costs $100 to play and requires 2 subscriptions to have access to all the content.

If we assume GTA6 is literally the perfect game, it’s probably one of a few games in history that can get away with such egregious pricing schemes, yet so many AAA games will attempt (and fail) to copy it (and probably detonate several studios in the process).

I'm an accelerationist at this point. The industry needs to burn for something better to rise up in its place. Kikestar is in a good position to light the match so I say let's get this show on the road. Anything still worth playing is indie and they only stand to benefit from AAA going down in flames.

I'm just anticipating the entire industry going down in flames at this point. None of this is sustainable. I just hope there's still a PC gaming market when the dust finally settles, what with hardware prices going through the roof lately.

Generation Alpha is going to play pen and paper games and go outside. Video games are going to be strapped to the same whales and any suckers willing to pay for the online consoles.

You're more optimistic than I am. My niece and nephew are gen alpha and they're just as bad as the younger half of gen Z when it comes to iCrap frying their brains since before they could walk. My mom has tried board games with my niece and hasn't had much success. My nephew is only 4 and he's autistic so his best hope is getting into PC gaming and becoming one of us in a decade or so.

That is more of a parenting problem. It might also be regional but I’ve seen it less at the stores and generally seen the parks more busy.

As for pen and paper, it still is super popular, much to Wizards trying hard to squash itself. Neon Odyssey made millions on a three book tabletop set kickstarter and some other tabletops I follow get funded day 1. Board games are hard to get into but they have to show interest first.

I can't see my nephews doing pen and paper games, but they will play board games and stuff and go outside for sure. I mean a lot of it is parenting because while they aren't restricted from modern tech entirely, it's often quite limited in when and how much. The oldest would 100% only put the iPad down to pick up the PS5 controller and probably fall asleep with one of them in his hands if allowed to do so. Can only hope some of that sticks when he gets older. He's at least not into any of the gacha games, I include all this Fortnite and GTA in that category.

On one hand - that's pretty sad for an already failing industry. On the other - fuck em, they deserve it. It's not that hard to make a good game and yet everyone collectively chooses to make a piece of crap product. I can understand indie projects being technically unimpressive but having one copycat after another with nary a difference is reflective of the bigger AAA industry.

indie projects being technically unimpressive

It depends how you define it. They're obviously not going to be making giant games that require the latest and greatest hardware but they can pack quite a lot into a game that only requires minimal specs and that's an impressive technical feat on its own. Between not being beholden to shareholders and not being held back by jeet code they can afford to optimize their games and therefore get a lot out of old/unimpressive hardware.

This. If an indie game can pay the bills and more for everyone involved, it’s a sustainable business.

It’s not like the game companies were trying to protect against this stuff. Remember “the FiRsT AaAa GaMe” Skull and Kidneystone? These companies are Stage 4 cancer and deserve radioactive destruction.
