I might even say it came before that. I mean God himself let the Jews go thru all sorts of calamity and it was always for the same reasons. They quit doing what's right for power and wealth. A third of what Jesus talked about was Jews abusing power and wealth. Paul mentioned in this thread was one of these Jews and chose to give all that up.
I might could draw parallels to today and Christianity and honestly it's a lot of what drove me from kid who went to church when told "Christian" to where I am today, because all I see is a world that's gotten progressively worse the farther it strays from real Christian values into full on godlessness or fake "It's okay to participate in abominations because Jesus loves you" Christians.
Those were all, essentially, God trying to teach them to behave. Read the last Books in the Old Testament; it's almost exclusively about fucking up Judea then saving them afterwards, like how you ground a child and let them go out once they've learned their lesson.
The Ministry of Christ was, to put it bluntly, God saying "Fuck it, if you still can't figure it out I'll give the Gentiles the same opportunity as you and see who does better"

Jews technically didn't break God's laws, while God technically didn't shoah them 109 times.
