I'm unsure who would ever have thought that. The IRA have been mostly various flavors of communists for more than half a century.
The need for the IRA ended when the conflict ended; of course it's corpse would be re-animated by grifters.
ICA's where it's a now.
Also, a lot of the hard core IRA members are either still guests of His Majesty or left Ireland.
IRA is only known because of memes.
People are not going to research much further than the memes.
And the memes leave out that the (more recent) IRA arguably was not that effective.
