Having used it a lot, AI is going to totally change the game industry. Some for the bad, some for the good. It still needs intelligent people to piece it together if you want a good project, but I'm sure some Indians and trannies will figure out how to squeeze out some turds in the street.
I've been messing with AI art a lot for a game I'm working on (that in all honestly it's going to be years if I ever finish, but I do for fun). It's a big mess honestly still. It will totally present usable art visually, especially if you are targeting low budget indie level game, but the poly count is way too high for what you have. Meaning if you dump a lot of these 3D models in a game the performance is going to be shit.
What pisses me off is everyone screeches about artists being destroyed by AI, but it's as bad if not worse on coders. Especially the entry level drivel ones, which at some point if they don't do that and they aren't taught where do they go? So I have absolutely zero shame in pissing off tranny artists and using AI art in a game.
Yeah, I've built a few prototypes but it's all slow going.
I'm really not sure I ever finish one. I get bogged down in art and level design because I just don't have it in me to do something that isn't just exceptional. My attention to detail kills me basically.
I've thought about since I like the coding side more getting into something open source to help with instead. It's super tough figuring how to be of any use in a huge fully built out project that's already going.
Well, don't use AI to code. Find something you can add and work on that.
I do both. AI is good for unimportant tedium, but I'd never present it as a product.
That FFVI AI concept looked amazing!
Visually it's everything I would want from an FFVI remake. I also know it's something Square would never actually do.
Also, that Barone idiot is just that, a low IQ idiot.
AI can streamline asset generation if you know what you're doing. Paying some jeets piss-poor wages to do something halfway below the lowest quality of an AI asset is a waste of time and money.
Liberal wankers are the ones going to be left behind for some years (maybe an entire gaming generation) as smart artists and designers make use of AI to speed up asset creation, streamline art pipelines, and create some amazing looking games in record time.
I'm still hoping someone can convince Toshiaki Mori to make art sheets of characters in front, side and back profiles and then use those templates to fill out animation cell sheets to make an awesome looking fighting game based on his King of Fighters 99 promotional art.
(example for those wondering:)
https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/snk/images/a/af/Whip-99.jpg/revision/latest/scale-to-width-down/250?cb=20080527164041

https://cdn.mobygames.com/promos/393355-the-king-of-fighters-99-millennium-battle-wallpaper.jpg
As others already pointed out, you'll still need artists for things like cell cleanup, animation consistency and removal of hallucinatory elements. But if you make a decent cell set using a generic wireframe model with clear labeling for the body parts it would help the AI fill in the rest pretty easily. And besides, clean-up would be WAY faster than manually drawing, colouring and animating each character by hand.
The fact that people were telling the creator of FFVI to stop shows how powerful it really is. I think a great trick would be to use something like Gaussian Splats to create the characters and models.
Wow that is really cool. And the video from Adam Savage going over the various applications could create some amazing opportunities for creating some awesome games with the Gaussian Splats.
It's sad that the conversation has centered around idiotic arguments about "human expressions".
There was only one comment on that Rock, Paper, Shotgun article that made the most salient point: "No one cares how the game was made, only if it's fun".
I see AI at the same spot as Flash or Modding was back in the day.
Much like guns, AI is a tool. Corporations, as usual, SUCK AT USING IT, but I've seen it used to make some interesting stuff (i.e. hard metal rock remixes of songs sung by a semi-synthesized voice based off of a human sample) that sound as good as the "real" thing.
From what I read, it takes a shitload of effort to make it look and sound good. Like getting the AI to do the same part of a song over and over and over again, and then after that editing the shit out of it to make it sound good.
Check out this metal remix of L'arc~En~Ciel's Driver's High (opening song to Great Teacher Onizuka, a fucking awesome anime from the late 90s)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iXC9vOMyIhM
Just telling the AI to use a random backing track for this and throwing a MIDI premade soundfile and picking a voice would make this sound like absolute shit.
When I read up on what was done to make it sound like this, I am genuinely impressed. Sure, the barrier to entry is low - that's where the "AI slop" comes from. But take an autistic Japanese otaku who knows what GOOD MUSIC actually sounds like, and you end up with something like this. The singer sounds like a grown ass woman grabbing the mic and YELLING THE FUCK OUT OF IT in a controlled manner. Unlike Westerners, the Japanese are already ahead of us and learning how to use AI as an instrument to harness. i.e. the old school Vocaloid mentality.
Also another thing I learned - AI fucks up 'holding' a note for longer than a few seconds. it doesn't know how to "hold" a note because it doesn't know what the context of a held note is. It's not like a human singer where you can tell him/her to take a note and "hold" it for a long time. It doesn't work like that.
Good creators learn how to "stitch" this shit together to make it sound smooth.
I know that if you need to it to keep at specific singing or emotions it's best to act them out and then have the voice swapped.
Let me guess “full EU GDPR complaint AI by 2050?”
Europe is falling behind so fucking hard.
It's very sad. Bureaucracy to death.
