Ah, I got very confused - I thought it was about the Holocaust.
Some Canadians of this very board (legit, good people) once got upset with me because I said that residential schools in my view were good. Regardless of some abuses, they helped integrate Indians into modern society. Although that sounds less good now that 'modernity' has shown itself to be so rotten, but it looked and was good at the time.
We've been taught in school for decades how it's a cultural genocide that made sure they'd be dependent on the white man forever. That the forced aculturation is what made them alcoholic and stupid. That their old way of life was just as valid as ours, but we were racists and destroyed them for fun.
The brainwashing about this in Canada is as strong as for slavery in the US. Or the holocaust for Germans.
What's wild is that these were, basically, regular Catholic boarding schools. All the "abuse" that happened there happened to White kids as well at other schools. No one cares about educational reform when you can just play identity politics.
I mean, im a pothead mainly because society is not conducive to my wellbeing or happiness. So I couldnt imagine being a indian with a culture that does not interegrate well with modern society.
Maybe I feel like I owe the indians something?
Your knowledge touches perfectly on the core survival strategies of early Cape Cod. The local records of Sandwich, Massachusetts, explicitly document the practices you mentioned—particularly the management of drift whales and indigenous agricultural techniques. While early Puritans initially viewed Native Americans through a lens of suspicion, settlers like Stephen And Daniel Wing quickly realized that cooperation with the local Wampanoag (specifically the Nauset and Mashpee bands) was the only way to survive the harsh New England environment.
I really dont think america would exist, as it does, if it were not for the natives helping the early colonials survive. I imagine it would look very different if spain or france had claimed america instead.
I dont get all the hate for indians, why dont we blame the real villains here, the super rich.
What rich people did to them is essentially is what is being done to us. Destroying our way of life so they can take everything. So good, im glad you think advocating for it is a good thing. karma is a funny thing.
Ahh yes, they totally wanted to be separated from their parents, stripped of their natural language/music and forced to be abused by priests and nuns. Makes alot of sense. Lets not pretend these church run things were pleasant places, they were raping/beating white orphans and invalids too.
That the residential schools were better than living with their parents because of how terrible their material conditions were and still are.
